5-Step Guide to ScrapWalls

I have loved making collages since I was a tween. Always a colorful child, I still can picture the one I scotch taped on my closet doors when I was 14…full of things like random ads, poems and words I would cut out of teen magazines.

Now that I’m a mom, my collages have a more techy feel…because everything I make these days looks better with the brainpower of a computer.

I was asked to review a photo collage website called ScrapWalls, where users can make a collage in the form of a shape just by uploading photos directly or using personal Facebook photo albums.

I jumped at the chance to check it out because A.) I love making collages – especially ones surrounding my baby girl. B.) I love any form of tech toys. C.) ScrapWalls is a Michigan-based business (Ann Arbor). Hello neighbors!

ScrapWalls was founded by some super cute guys who happen to all be University of Michigan alum. ScrapWalls originated from software that one of the founders, Kevin, created to help make an anniversary gift for his girlfriend. Isn’t that sweet?! He wanted to build a shape collage with their photos but there wasn’t anything out there that could do it. Kevin enlisted the help of developer friend to make the work of art and the rest is history.

So onto how the site works…I’ve put together a quick 5-step guide of how to make a ScrapWalls collage:

1. Pick a size. I went for the big guy – a 20″ x 30″ collage, which fits up to 100 photos.

2. Choose from 25 shapes. There’s all kinds of themes – perfect for all of life’s milestones – graduation, wedding, pets, travel, baby and more. There’s even a martini glass that would be great for pics from a ladies night out.

3. Upload photos. If you are comfortable, you can let ScrapWalls connect to your Facebook account and pull photos that way. It was so easy and fast. I selected the photos I wanted from each album and each was auto placed. I tried two different routes – a shape and a normal rectangular collage.

4. I ended up going the boring route with the rectangles…mostly because I could squeeze more photos of Little K in All I had to do was rearrange the photos to my liking.

5. Then, I changed up the background color and added text. A quick “add to cart” and my collaging fun was complete.

The process was so simple, it literally took me about 15 minutes to put it together from start to finish and place my order. The collage arrived a few days later in a sturdy mailing tube and I was really impressed with the quality of photo paper and how bright the colors were in my photos, despite some of them being taken with my cell phone.

I only have a few complaints about the website – I wish I could crop my images once placed (especially with the shape options) and I would’ve loved to have brown as a color option since Little K’s room is pink and brown (I used white instead). Other than that, it turned out super cute and I smile every time I look at it in our hallway.
