Christmas Decor: What’s Your Style?

So it has come to my attention that I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to Christmas decor.

  • You won’t find blow-up anything in our yard because I despise the way they look all deflated during the day.
  • You would never see blinking lights anywhere in our home.
  • I don’t like much that goes out of the bounds of typical Christmas reds, greens, white and gold.
  • Although our tree has a variety of ornaments, I secretly wish they matched or had some over-arching theme.
  • I’m not a fan of any cartoon character “Christmas”-ified and plastered all over things such as T-shirts and decor (i.e. Dora, Mickey Mouse, Sponge Bob items. Blech.)

At the end of the day, I like decor tastefully done. Traditional. Lots of garland and big red bows and white lights (color is cool too when done right).

You don’t have to like my style and I don’t have to like yours. In the end, it’s not the decor that matters this season. It’s about family togetherness, friend love, appreciating all of our blessings, and if you’re a Christian, the birth of Jesus.

But, I may poke fun of you a tad if you have blinking lights ;)

What’s your Christmas decor style?

  1. Totally agree with you on almost everything you said. No blow up stuff in the yard. No blinking lights. Ever.

Our Christmas tree is a mish mash of ornaments we’ve collected over the years, but I think that’s the point of the tree. Each one has certain memories. I even have a small section that gets decorated with all my Star Wars ornaments every year. When you turn the lights on, you’re greeted my the voices of the Emperor and Darth Vader.

My wife does have her own beautifully themed and matching tree in the living room.

And I would go back to REAL lights any day. Hate the look of the LEDs. Way to bright and stark.

  2. You really need to have a chat with my hubby…he is going CRAZY with cheesy decorations. Our front yard now has 5 light up trees, reindeer and a snowman. He didn’t even attempt to hide cords. It’s a mess!

Inside I have taken over control a bit, at least. I secretly want to hide the outside decorations after this season.

I agree about the character themed items…I don’t really like them in general. I hope you guys are enjoying your season, I love the pics!

  3. I don’t like the blow up yard decor either and blinking lights make me dizzy. :) I’m mostly traditional Christmas decorations but like the warmth and festive cheer people bring to their homes in unique ways. This is out first ‘married’ Christmas together so I love that every ornament on the tree has a special story or childhood memory for my husband and me. And I bought him an advent calendar because he never had one!

  4. I agree with you on those silly blow up things and blinking lights! Oh how I hate blinking lights!!

My tree has always been a mix of this, that, and everything in between. But this year… well this year I am taking control and I am going to decorate it so it’s all matching! Red & gold with white lights. I’ve always wanted a perfectly matching tree and I’ll get it this year.

  5. I couldn’t agree more! I totally have a style & things I like to see/don’t like to see at the holidays. I feel like this year I’m giving myself a little pass because I can’t find all my good stuff (it’s hidden somewhere in storage), so we bought super gawdy things at Meijer that the kids picked out. Trust me, some of it is sooooo gawdy. ;)
