As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’d be back today to highlight 5 fab ways to give back in metro Detroit.
Good news: There are so many unbelievable organizations doing positive things for the region. Bad news: It was difficult to choose only 5.
But I did it! Here are 5 that are near and dear to my heart and always have great, easy ways to give back:
Detroit Area Diaper Bank – Anyone with a child knows how expensive diapers are. This local agency helps to ensure babies (and seniors and the disabled) in need of diapers get them since WIC and state programs like food stamps and medicare do not cover the cost. The organization is currently rallying to get 200,000 diapers by Thanksgiving. To learn how you or your organization can help, visit the website. (And be sure to remember them when you change sizes and have leftovers!)
Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) – If you need a confidence boost, look no further than volunteering with Special Olympics Michigan, an amazing organization that works with the developmentally disabled. If you’re great at sports – anything from basketball to swimming to bowling and more – be a coach. If you’re more of a money-raiser, try your hand at any of the organization’s key fundraisers, like jumping in the Detroit River like I did (see prior post). To learn more about how to help, see here.
Operation Kid-Equip (OKE) – In Michigan, 22 percent of children live in poverty. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a pretty shocking stat. OKE has been created to help those families struggling by providing free school supplies, books, hygiene and food items. Without a pencil, how will these children write? Without a book, how will they learn to read? To learn more about various volunteering opportunities with OKE, see here.
United Way for Southeastern Michigan – This is one of the big guys in town, with a volunteer opportunity to match every passion. Check out the current opportunity list here to easily find something that fits into your schedule. BONUS: I just got the inside scoop on a mega cool event in the works…GMC and the NFL will be building a playground in the Detroit area as a show of commitment to United Way’s national goal of getting 1.9 million more kids active and healthy by 2018. The exact playground location is still TBD (will be metro Detroit), but if you’d like to be kept in the loop for the early October event, visit this link.
The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division – This org does a ton for the community. The annual Red Kettle campaign rakes in crucial funding needed to feed, clothe and shelter thousands of local people all year long (Fun fact: Every dollar that is donated stays in the community where it’s donated). Visit here to view volunteer opportunities. Another easy way to give back? Donate old clothes and other items at one of the metro Detroit thrift stores. All profits from the stores benefit the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
I’ve barely even chipped away at the thousands of amazing non-profits Detroit has.
