When I received this week’s VlogTalk prompt list, it wasn’t hard to choose which one I was going to do. I take advantage of every opportunity possible to get on my soapbox and rant about things that irk me.
There’s one thing that stands above the rest: lazy people. Specifically those who press the handicap buttons on doors when they don’t need it. Hear me out:
What I fail to mention in my video is that I am extremely passionate about helping people with disabilities. I interned at Special Olympics and have volunteered at various organizations helping amazing folks with a wide range of disabilities, both physically and mentally. That alone has made me rant about this pet peeve in the past.
I feel blessed to not have to use that button. I am lucky enough to have legs, arms and hands. I can open the door and perhaps even be courteous enough to hold the door for whomever is walking behind me.
Those doors use power. Power can go out. If everyone and their brother uses those doors and they breakdown and no longer have power, what happens when someone comes along in a wheelchair? Or a mom with multiples in a stroller needs it? Or me, balancing bags from the store, my purse, my phone, my baby’s bag and Little K in a stroller?
Think next time you’re faced with an automatic button. Do you really need it? If not, please think twice and maybe even have a thought of thanks for being blessed enough to not need it.
Thanks for listening. I feel better getting that off my chest!
