I am crazy sensitive. Always have been. I was the kid that cried when other kids got made of fun of in school because I felt bad for them. For some reason, God gave me this wonderful curse of sensitivity. Which is incredibly odd because when it comes to my own personal matters, I can be as strong as steel, but when I see others hurting, it hits me at the core. And it only seems to get worse with age and motherhood.
My husband knows when something is getting to me. I’ll try to hide my tears by cuddling the blanket close to my face, but he always catches me. And generally it’s over something completely silly.
Here are a few of the examples of things that make me cry:
- News: Stories about bullying, hatred and missing kids. Or, happy ending stories about kids or animals.
- Movies: Forrest Gump, A Little Princess, North Country, Up, and too many others to name.
- Commercials: Any Hallmark or ASPCA commercial and that darn “Silent Night” Pampers commercial with all the sleeping babies (that little newborn quivering lip gets me every time!).
- Books: On The Night You Were Born, Love You Forever and when I read almost anything about World War II, and the suffering people endured.
- TV: Our America with Lisa Ling, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, A Baby Story and Undercover Boss.
- Songs: “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds, “Jesus Take The Wheel” by Carrie Underwood, plus countless others.
If you’ve never heard this song and want to feel moved, give it a listen. There’s no official video out there, so just listen to the words.
- When I see anything about military families being reunited after a long period of time.
- When I’m sitting in the dark rocking my baby to sleep and really thinking about the moment and knowing she’s only going to be this little for a short amount of time.
And now, a story about women and crying that may make you cry…
————————————-
“Mom, why are you crying?” a young boy asked his mom.
“Because I’m a woman,” she told him.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
His mom just hugged him and said, “And you never will.”
Later the little boy asked his father, “Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?”
“All women cry for no reason,” was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone the man said, “God, why do women cry so easily?”
God said: “When I made women she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.
I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.
I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly. This same sensitivity helps her to make a child’s boo-boo feel better and shares in her teenagers anxieties and fears.
I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.
I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfaltering.
I gave her a tear to shed, and it’s hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed. It’s her only weakness; it’s a tear for mankind.”

What brings tears to your eyes?
Dianna says
Oh, Laura, it’s so odd that you post this today. My cousin (who’s my age; we’ve always been very close) is in a local nursing home….probably with just weeks to live. Today, while hubby and I were having breakfast in a fast food restaurant (thankfully we were the only ones there at the time), Elvis’s song: “If I Get Home On Christmas Day” came on the restaurant’s music system. I immediately started crying. Sobbing. My sweet hubby just took my hand, and didn’t ask any questions. I think it’s knowing that she won’t be home for Christmas….and won’t be going back home at all.
Thanks for listening to my little story. Oh – and all the things that make you cry? They make me cry too!
I love that story you shared about women and crying. It’s true!
Mrs. Weber says
Oh my goodness, Dianna! What a touching story. I’m about to cry over here. Prayers for her in the final days of her life. Hope she gets to enjoy Christmas in some happier capacity.
Alison@Mama Wants This says
I tear up watching shows like The Biggest Loser (shh don’t tell anyone) – but it could just be hormones. 🙂
Oh the Ben Fold’s song is gorgeous.
Mrs. Weber says
You’re secret is safe with me 😉 I tear up over everything!
Glad you like the Ben Fold’s song. So gorgeous.
JDaniel4's Mom says
I love the song! The words have left me crying! I hope I am all these things. I have stumbled, tweet, and facebooked this post.
Mrs. Weber says
Aww, glad you enjoyed the song. Thanks for promoting this – greatly appreciated!
Sarah says
This post just made me tear up! And I share in almost everything you mentioned. When those ASPCA commercials come on, I always call Bella over to snuggle with me. It never fails. Also, I cry when I hear testimonials about how an organization has helped someone overcome a tragedy or difficulty in life.
Mrs. Weber says
Aww, I wish I had a kitty to snuggle with when I see those commercials.
And you’re right – any testimonials from an org doing great work make me tear up too!
Eve says
Oh my gosh I cry at most of the things on your list too. I think we’re just good people. My grandma used to say the good people always cry because they feel with their hearts and it shows in their eyes.
Mrs. Weber says
LOVE that quote! Your grandma sounds like a very wise lady 🙂
Jackie says
I’m the same way… parades, my kids concerts, all sorts of silly things will bring a tear to my eye.
Oh.. blog posts should come with warnings too because if I’m at work & reading and get all teary I look silly!!
Mrs. Weber says
That’s a good call…I’m going to have to put a disclaimer on future possibly tear-causing posts 😉

Love Ben Folds. And I cry at the end of Cars, every single time. Silly, I know. What a lovely list to reflect on, the story is perfect. Thank you.
Mrs. Weber says
No problem – thanks for hosting the link-up!
And yes, the end of Cars causes me to cry too. You’re not alone!
KW says
I have never been able to get through reading The Night You Were Born without tearing up! Glad I’m not the only one!
Mrs. Weber says
You are not alone, friend. I’m glad Little K doesn’t know I am crying (yet). I hope by the time she’s old enough to realize I’m crying, I’ll be numb to the words 😉 It’s so corny, but so beautiful too!
This Side of 30 says
Aw, you are so cute! Such a lovely story.
I’ve never been much of a crier, but motherhood has definitely turned me into a sap. I mostly get teary about stuff with babies, and the miracle they are. Like when people announce their pregnancy, or when I see a pregnant woman or one with a newborn.
And especially when I read stories about someone overcoming infertility (and definitely when I read about someone still struggling with it).
Mrs. Weber says
I get teary eyed when I learn of pregnancy too! And your stories about infertility and how you overcame made me bawl. Such a miracle, indeed!
Leigh says
I am with you on all of these things. I can’t even escape crying when I watch espn with Zach because they’re always doing special interest stories on athletes that have overcome hardships or done heroic things (the college lacrosse player who saved all those people on 9/11 had me BAWLING)
Confession: I also cry every time pomp and circumstance starts playing at a graduation…I am going to be a mess when I have kids graduating if I can’t even make it through my friends’ ceremonies, haha…
Mrs. Weber says
HA! I barely have watched ESPN, but I love it when they do those profile stories…they always make me cry too! You’re not alone.
And yes, graduations and Pomp and Circumstance always gets to me, too! I cried at Jason’s mom’s graduation – I was full of such pride for her!
Teresa says
And I’m crying now. And it’s okay. Thank you for sharing this today!
Mrs. Weber says
Let it out, girl! We’re all here for you 🙂
Nikki Little says
I am right there with ya, sappy sister! Most of these things make me cry, too. I also get teared up easily if I watch a show (such as Grey’s Anatomy) where someone loses a significant other at an early age. That causes serious waterworks!
Mrs. Weber says
I could totally see that…especially with your emotional history of worrying about that. Gets to me too!
Jen @ BigBinder says
Oh my God, the Special Olympics. I can’t keep it together at ALL.
Mrs. Weber says
ME EITHER! I used to work with Special Olympics Michigan and I definitely shed some tears at the summer games. It’s so wonderful to watch!
Kate says
All of this is so true! I was never much of a crier before I was a mother, either; now, it’s almost every movie, song (especially with sweeping scores or beautiful/sad/beautifully sad lyrics), commercial (the Pampers one gets me too – but the one with the babies around the world)…oh, and I also made the mistake of listening to Brian Wilson’s version of “Baby Mine” (from “Dumbo”) recently, and I’ll find myself singing it in my head as I rock the baby to sleep and will start sobbing. Gah!
Mrs. Weber says
I’ve never heard of “Baby Mine.” I’m totally going to go listen to it…and grab a box of Kleenex while in the process 😉

Love the story. Thanks for sharing.
