Disclosure: I was provided with two tickets to see Monsters University for the purpose of this post.
There’s one movie in our collection that has received the most views by the toddler: Monsters, Inc.
I purchased the movie in high school. It’s by far my favorite Pixar Film, so when I heard they were making a prequel, I was giddy with excitement. Since my daughter loves it as well, I marked my calendar for today when the movie was set to premier to the public.
Except we got invited to a sneak peak! We watched every clip of the movie available and Kinley was excited, too. We never get to go out just her and I, so our night together was something very special to me.
Kinley and I before our night out!
We arrived at the theater and immediately jumped in line for snacks because that’s the first rule of taking a toddler into a theater: They need them! Kinley doesn’t get a lot of junky foods, so this was a MAJOR treat for her. She was ecstatic.
We put on our 3D googles and were amazed at what we were seeing. I’ll admit it: This was only my second movie in 3D and it blew me away! The animated short The Blue Umbrella before the opening credits was even incredible. I loved the little story and seeing it in 3D was pretty cool.
OK, so about the movie. I have not laughed that much at a movie in a long time. It was seriously hilarious. I’m no movie critic, but I will say I am very hard to please in the movie department. I truly was astounded at the animation, which was visually awesome and the one-liners, geared at both kids AND adults, kept on coming.
I also loved all the new characters, especially the Oozma Kappa fraternity monsters Terry and Teri, Squishy, Don, Art and Squishy’s mom {she was especially hilarious to me}. They were pretty darn funny and I loved seeing their characters unfold throughout the course of the film.
Parents don’t need to worry about getting bored in this kid’s flick. I just kept thinking about my own college experiences and could relate to this film so much. For me, it was like a blend of Pitch Perfect and Old School, but animated, and with kid-friendly language. My guess is if you enjoyed the humor in those movies, you’ll like this one too.
So the big question: Was it as good as the original? YES. OK, maybe it’s unfair to compare since films have come such a long way during the past 12 years since Monsters, Inc. debuted. I am so happy Pixar took their time with this and did it right. Everything from the characters to the humor and animation was extrememly well done in my opinion, and I can’t wait to add this to our collection once it comes out on DVD.
VERDICT
Five Stars! {Or would it just be 4? I don’t know, but I give it an A+} This is totally worth spending money on the family and visiting the theater to see it in 3D. Shoot, go see it even without kids or on a date night — it’s truly THAT entertaining.

What movies are you looking forward to this summer?
Dude Mom says
We were supposed to go to a screening and then stupid old soccer try outs got in the way. Plus, we have this thing where my tween refuses to go and my 5 year old wants to while the 8 year old isn’t sure so we have to work that whole thing out. I guess the 5 year old and I are gonna be having a date soon!
