If you’re visiting because you want to see what blogging is all about, I have some quick tips for you:

You must have a passion for writing. If you hate writing, don’t blog! I try to post at least 3 times a week. Bloggers that make the big bucks post much more often — sometimes even multiple times per day. They spend hours on social networks promoting their stuff as well. The root of it all is writing clearly, consistently, and in a way that connects people.

If you want to make money from blogging, don’t put the cart before the horse. Sure, there are plenty of people who make six figures from blogging. To them I say rock on. The majority of bloggers don’t make a whole lot. Just like any job, you get what you put in. Be prepared to put in hours of work if you’d like to be successful.

Determine what success looks like to you. I was unsure of my purpose when I first started out. Today, I seek to share valuable information to my readers, but also only choose to write about things I personally care about or can learn from. I don’t have a niche, and I like it that way. Success to me, is getting a thank you email, retweet or repin from a reader. That helps me to validate I am doing something right.

Always be genuine or people will see right through you. This is just a good rule to follow in life, but it’s especially true with blogging. Bloggers are very much public figures. If you’re not true to yourself, someone will call you out.

You must actually like people. The best bloggers I know are incredibly down-to-earth. As your blog grows, you will get more opportunities to do fun things. You can’t hide in the corner {or behind your computer} and be shy. From my experiences, bloggers are some of the nicest people ever, so don’t be scared to strike up a conversation.

Blogging professionally is a business, so treat it as such. Be responsive to emails and messages. Just like the business world, blogging isn’t always about what you know, but who you know. Don’t burn bridges and don’t poo-poo all of the “small time” opportunities. Sometimes those can be the best experiences.

Understand your target audience and write for them. If it’s moms, write about things moms actually care about. Strike a chord with your readers. Teach them something new. Write about things they can relate to. Make them laugh or cry and they will love you forever — promise.
