Family Fun In February 2014 in Southeast Michigan
February 1-2 — Dora The Explorer Live: Dora’s Pirate Adventure {Ann Arbor} — Skyline High School’s Theatre Group will be performing Dora the Explorer Live!: Dora’s Pirate Adventure for the preschool crowd. Get the full scoop here from Ann Arbor With Kids.
February 1 — Kid’s Workshop at Home Depot {Nationwide} — Make a race car for FREE at Home Depot. Hands-on workshops are designed for children ages 5 – 12 and take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Advance registration encouraged {link above}.
February 1 — Winter Star Party at the Wint Nature Center {Clarkston} — Learn to locate winter constellations inside the Wint Nature Center’s StarLab planetarium from 8-10 p.m. Gaze at deep sky wonders through telescopes provided by the Oakland Astronomy Club. Star-studded craft & snack included. Suitable for school-aged children and adults. $4/person.
February 2 — Groundhog Day with Michigan’s Official Groundhog, Woody, at the Howell Nature Center {Howell} — Get your spring forecast straight from Woody, Michigan’s Official Groundhog! The Howell Conference & Nature Center will host a special celebration starting at 7:45 a.m., with the long-awaited prediction coming at 8:15 a.m. sharp. Pancake breakfast will follow, which costs $8/adults and $6/children.
February 2 — Family-Friendly Film at the Michigan Theater – The Muppet Movie {Ann Arbor} — Part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series. 1:30 p.m. Adults – $10, seniors/children 13+ – $8. Free for kids 12 and under.
February 7 — FREE Parents Night Out with Olive Garden and My Gym {Farmington Hills} — You heard right! No paying a babysitter for a delicious night at Olive Garden! Get the scoop here at Metro Detroit Mommy.
February 7 — Under The Sea Ball Daddy-Daughter Dance at Play {East Lansing} — Little mermaids and their favorite date {dad, grandpa, uncle, etc.} will be treated like royalty while dining on pizza and sweet treats while dancing the night away to music. Highlighting the event will be a visit from a very special Mermaid. The evening will be captured with a keepsake photo, and make-and-take crafts. 6:30-8 p.m. $24/non-member couples, $11 each additional daughter.
February 7-9 — Ice Carvings and Fireworks Spectacular {Utica} — Ice sculptures, children’s activities, carriage rides, and more. See the entire schedule at the link above. FREE.
February 8 — Cabin Fever Flick and Float at Gardner Pool {Lansing} — Bring the family for open swim and a special treat from 2-4 p.m. $7/person or $10/family. Registration encouraged. Call (517) 483-6685.
February 8 — Pottery of the Earth Workshop at Red Oaks Nature Center {Madison Heights} — Clay can be shaped & molded into endless creative possibilities! Get your hands dirty from 1-2:30 p.m. as you make a one-of-a-kind, earth-themed, functional keepsake to take home. $7/person.
February 8 — Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinic {Nationwide} — Make a love note holder for Valentine’s Day! Workshop takes place at 10 a.m. and advance registration encouraged {link above}. FREE.
February 8 — Lunar New Year Festival {Howell} — This new event will celebrate the Lunar New Year and will feature Asian cuisine, culture, art and games and a Dragon 5K, all while promoting local businesses. Most activities FREE.
February 8-9 — Wild Winter African Adventure at the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — Take an African drum lesson and listen to stories told by Kenyan naturalist and Detroit Zoo Education Specialist David Gakure. Enjoy live entertainment, arts and crafts, games and educational experiences. All activities are free with Zoo admission and take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ford Education Center. Admission price range: Free for ages 2 and under; $10-$14 for all others.
February 8-10 — Motown Winter Blast {Detroit} — Visit Campus Martius Park for ice sculptures, a 200-foot snow slide, and 50+ musical acts scheduled to perform on two stages. There will also be dog-sledding and ice-skating demonstrations, snow shoeing, marshmallow roasting, and a Taste of Detroit tent. Entry cost: 3 canned food items, 1 children’s book, or $2 to be donated to Matrix Human Services to help those in need.
February 9 — FREE admission to the Flint Children’s Museum {Flint} — Visit this adorable and educational museum perfect for the younger crowd for free this day from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. thanks to Hurley and Kohls.
February 9 — The Verve Pipe Kids’ Show {Ann Arbor} — Formed in East Lansing, the Verve Pipe gained a worldwide following for their textured rock music. They’re back and ready to reach a new generation with their family-friendly songs and will be performing at the Michigan Theater at 1:30 p.m. {You guys — they are AWESOME!} $19.45/ticket {fees included}.
February 9 — Diary of A Worm, A Spider and A Fly at The Wharton {Lansing} — Join a swarm of young crawlers on a musical journey to discover who they are and what makes them special. Along the way, you’ll learn interesting facts about creepy critters, enjoying lots of laughs at their unusual – and sometimes rather icky – antics! 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. shows. $17.50/ticket.
February 14-16 — 101 Dalmations With The Novi Civic Theatre {Novi} — With a delightful score, lovable characters, and one of the most evil villains in the Disney canon, this stage adaptation is certain to charm and delight all audiences. This production has two casts totaling 75 kids, K-6th grade. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 4-12 and seniors.
February 15-16 — Enchanted Princess Ball {Warren} — The Enchanted Princess Ball is a theatrical performance that transports little princesses into a magical fairytale world! Classic stories are retold as favorite characters are brought to life from the pages of favorite books to the stage. Awaiting your arrival will be: Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell, and more. Tickets are $19 for both adults and children.
February 15 — The Monster Who Ate My Peas at Meadow Brook Theatre {Rochester} — Based on an award-winning book, this show tells the funny story of a boy who does not want to eat his peas. Show is at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Group Tickets $12 – Reg. $15. Ideal for grade K-2.
February 15 — The Little Mermaid Jr. at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts {Clinton Township} — Shows at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. {I’ve seen this show…So cute!}
February 16 — Engineering Day at Impression 5 Science Center {Lansing} — Stop in between 12 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. for a day engineered for fun, brought to you by the MSU College of Engineering. Regular admission prices — Adults: $7, seniors: $6.50, children, 1 & older: $7, children, up to 1-year-old: FREE. Also, free for members.
February 17 — FREE Admission to The Henry Ford for Target Family Fun Days {Dearborn} — It’s President’s Day, which means time for another Target FREE day! Free parking, live music, make-and-take activities and more. From 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
February 21 — Mother + Son Date Night at Play {East Lansing} — Little guys and their favorite date {mom, grandma, aunt, etc.} are invited to spend some quality time together during an evening of rad games, dancing, stories, a craft, tattoos and food. There will be a photo booth for you to take totally awesome pictures as a keepsake! 6:30-8 p.m. $24/non-member couples, $11 each additional son.
Please note: I found Daddy/Daughter and Mother/Son dances in nearly every community but obviously couldn’t list them all. Search for one in your community and make a fun memory together 😀

I know. It’s really fun music too! The kind that non-parents can totally enjoy too 😉 I’ve seen them do both adult and kid music and they’re great with both genres!
