Isn’t May the most glorious month ever? It’s typically beautiful, but not too hot or buggy quite yet, so I absolutely love it! And how about those May flowers? YAY!
Here is a round-up of family fun in southeast Michigan in May 2014, including Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and Lansing areas.
Through May 4 — Bookstock: Used Media Sale {Livonia} — Search through thousands of used media items, including books, CDs, DVDs and more. Most items are priced $1-$4 and all proceeds benefit local non-profits.
May 1-4 — Michigan International Women’s Show at Suburban Collection Showplace {Novi} — Food, fashion and fun for mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends at the 19th annual Michigan International Women’s Show. The event features shopping, cooking, fashion shows, makeovers and entertainment. Enjoy demonstrations and experience hundreds of exhibitors displaying cosmetics, fragrances, lingerie, purses, shoes, gifts, decor items, food, fashion, accessories and arts and crafts. $10/adults, $5/ages 6-12, free/ages 5 and under.
May 2-4 — Disney’s Camp Rock: The Musical at the Costick Center {Farmington Hills} — Disney’s Camp Rock; The Musical covers the adventures and challenges of a group of talented kids who planned to spend the summer jamming out at Camp Rock, only to find out that there’s a new, flashier camp in town. Tickets are $10, children ages 3 and under are free.
May 2 — FREE Bat Zone Tour at Cranbrook Institute of Science {Bloomfield Hills} — Visit for free during the first Friday of each month. Meet various animals from around the world, such as a two-toed sloth, flying squirrels, owls, skunks and more than 150 bats.
May 3-4 and 10-11 — Day Out With Thomas at Greenfield Village {Dearborn} — During Thomas’ annual visit to Greenfield Village, he is the centerpiece of six days of family fun and entertainment. You can ride Thomas around the village and meet Sir Topham Hatt™ face-to-face. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. MEMBERS: $11.75 per person, age 1 year & older. NON-MEMBER: Prices include admission to Greenfield Village and the Thomas the Tank Experience: Seniors age 62 & up: $33.75, Adults age 13-61: $35.75, Youth age 5-12: $29.25, Child age 1-4: $11.75. All infants under 1 year are free.
May 3 — Tuning Your Tot into Spring at Independence County Park {Clarkston} — Help your 3–6–year–old combat “Nature Deficit Disorder”. We’ll focus on “NATURE NOISE–What do You Hear”? Fun includes songs, nature hike, craft, snack and more. 1–2:45 p.m. $4/person.
May 3 — Frog Fest at the Leslie Science & Nature Center {Ann Arbor} — Come celebrate the wonderful world of frogs with us! Learn how to identify the frogs and toads of Michigan and then journey to Black Pond to look for some. After your hike, meet some Michigan amphibians in our Critter House and others from around the world. Together we will also watch these slippery, bumpy creatures eat a meal. Between playing games, listening to frog stories, and other activities it will be a festival frog lovers will not want to miss. Space limited. May 3-4 — May Day Faerie Festival at Heavenly Scent Herb Farm {Fenton} — Come and experience 2 days of Faerie fun, lore, treats, workshops and plants. $1 admission cost. Free activities include storytelling, dancers, and more. See the entire schedule at the link above.
May 3-4 — Enchanted Princess Ball {Birmingham} — The Enchanted Princess Ball is a theatrical performance that transports little princesses into a magical fairytale world! Classic stories are retold as favorite characters are brought to life from the pages of favorite books to the stage. Awaiting your arrival will be: Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell, and more. Tickets are $19 for both adults and children and should be purchased in advance at the link above. This event will be at the Our Shepherd Lutheran School in Birmingham.
May 3 — Home Depot Kids Workshop — Build A Flower Planter {Nationwide} — Come learn how to build a flower planter. Just in time for Mother’s Day, this planter makes a great gift! FREE hands-on workshops; designed for children ages 5 – 12, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. All kid get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. May 3 — Zoo Enrichment Day at the Howell Nature Center {Howell} — Zoo Day is an opportunity for participants age 5 and up to build an enrichment activity, then watch as the lucky recipients — foxes, coyotes, mink, and bobcat — exhibit such natural behaviors as foraging, exploration, locomotion, and social interaction. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. $10 per person, $30 maximum/family. May 6 — FREE LEGO® Store Monthly Mini Model Build: LEGO Dragon {Somerset Collection in Troy} — Visit your local LEGO Store on the first Tuesday of every month and you can learn how to build a cool mini model, and take it home – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only. A new model will be available every month and will be specially themed to that month – ask a Store Associate for details! May 8 — Nature Sprouts at Red Oaks County Park {Madison Heights} — Foster your child’s love of nature while we focus on NATURE NOISE–What do YOU Hear?” Hands–on nature discovery will include a hike, craft, story, snack and more. Ages 3–6, accompanied by an adult. 1–2:45 p.m. $4/person.

May 10 — “Mother” Nature at Red Oaks County Park {Madison Heights} — Learn how wildlife mothers raise their young. We’ll make a special gift for mom just in time for Mother’s Day, enjoy an interpretive stroll through Suarez Friendship Woods and round out the afternoon with a refreshing snack. 10–11:30 a.m. $4/person.
May 10 — Lowes Build and Grow – Flower Delivery Truck {Nationwide} — Mother’s Day is right around the corner! Bring your child to Lowe’s and they can build this cool Flower Delivery Truck. Add a flower and it’s the perfect way to deliver a special gift to Mom!
May 10 — Henry and Mudge at Meadowbrook Theatre {Rochester} – Henry and his dog Mudge share all kinds of adventures in this play made for kiddos. Ideal for grades K-5. Group tickets: $12, regular: $15. Purchase tickets at the link above.
May 10 — Lunch with Princess Joslyn at Canterbury Village {Lake Orion} — Singing, dancing, story time and lunch with a princess! 11 a.m. $12/person.
May 12 — Macy’s 2nd Mondays at Greenfield Village {Dearborn} — Introduce your preschool children to the wonders of The Henry Ford — all before nap time {10 a.m. – noon}. Storytelling, live entertainment and dozens of hands-on activities related to some of the museum’s most memorable artifacts. May’s theme is “Springs’ in Bloom,” and the event will take place in Greenfield Village where kids will get to explore the working farms district and learn to plant and there will also be maypole dancing with Barry the Guitar Guy. Additionally, the make and take activity will be to plant a seed in a pot to take home. FREE for kids, adults can get 25 percent off their tickets with this coupon.
May 17 — Mike Super Magic & Illusion at The Whiting {Flint} — Named 2012 Performing Arts Entertainer of the Year, MIKE SUPER astonishes audience members with his unique and captivating live stage performance. Mike pairs cutting edge magic and illusion with state of the art theatrical elements, including an interactive stage set, video projection, dramatic lighting, and energetic music, while sharing his distinctive humor and personality. May 20 — Stories for Sprouts and Seedlings at the MSU Children’s Gardens {East Lansing} — This program is designed for children ages 2-4 to experience the wonders of gardening through stories and hands-on projects. Each month a different book is featured with an accompanying gardening activity. This month: “The Enormous Potato” by Aubrey Davis. FREE. Small cost to pay to park. May 21 — Wild Wednesday Nights at Red Oaks County Park {Madison Heights} — Join us the third Wednesday of every month to share animal facts, and see and feel fur, feathers and scales. A nature film will be shown in the auditorium. May’s theme is animal babies. $2/person. 6:30–7:30 p.m.
May 31 — Be A Tourist In Your Own Town {Lansing} — This day, created by the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau, allows event participants to visit more than 70 local attractions and one-day only special tours that include: Impression 5 Science Center, Potter Park Zoo, the State Capitol Building, the Michigan Historical Museum and so much more. Participants can purchase a “passport” for $1 at various locations throughout the community throughout the month of May. May 31 — Disney Store Re-Launch With Special Guests! {The Somerset Collection in Troy} — The Disney Store will be re-launching and the first 500 guests to attend the opening celebration at 10 a.m. will receive a free gift and an opportunity to meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in the Grand Court from noon to 4 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring their cameras.
