The best part about summer for me? LAKE TIME! {Which also means summer legs!}
Seriously…Is there a better reason to live in Michigan? I think not! In fact, I just learned a few awesome Michigan lake factoids thanks to a coloring book my daughters received:
- No point in Michigan is further than 85 miles from any one of the Great Lakes.
- The Great Lakes supply more than 80% of North America’s and 20% of the world’s surface fresh water supply.
- There are 11,037 inland lakes which are 10 acres or more in size.
…and unrelated, but kids look SO cute in bathing suits, AmIRight? Couldn’t resist sharing these shots from our vacay earlier this year…
Lucky for me and my little beach babes, my dad lives on an inland lake 15 minutes away from me, so I get to spend a lot of time on the water during summer.
This means a few things. 1) I have to shave often {not easy while pregnant} and 2) I apply a ton of sunscreen during the summer.
Enjoying the view of my family at my dad’s lake on my birthday last week.
During this pregnancy I’ve developed varicose veins, which means I need to take even better care of my legs than ever before and wear my compression stockings when I’m on my feet for long periods of time.
When my legs do come out to play, I make sure they are looking their best! With the help of the Walmart health and beauty department, I’ve developed a great leg care plan for my legs. Check out my shaving tips to summarize your legs below.
PREPARE
First, with being pregnant, I wash my hair and body then shut the water off and sit on our shower ledge to shave my legs. This way I don’t get dizzy. Also, fun fact: Saving your shaving for the end of your shower gives your leg hair time to plump up, making them easier to shave.
SHAVE
Second, I always use shaving gel and a GOOD razor. My absolute favorite is Skintimate®. I just love the silky feeling it leaves and the variety of scents available. I also avoid the cheap razors. Sure, they do the job, but I get way more cuts and they lose their sharpness quickly. I absolutely love the razors with 4 blades, such as the Schick® Xtreme® Hawaiian Tropic Razor, which makes shaving quicker and better. Also? Shaving downward helps with irritation, while shaving up gives you a closer shave {just go slow}! I make sure to go both directions to get all those unwanted hairs.
PROTECT
Third, I moisturize, and in summer — always with SPF. When I know I am going to be spending a day at the beach, I may sure to apply sunscreen on both the kids and I and apply as directions indicate. I recently discovered Hawaiian Tropic® Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance with SPF and love it! It goes on exactly like lotion and smells great, so you can avoid that greasy and sticky feeling from some sunscreens.

Where are your favorite spots to head in summer to show off your legs?
Great tips! I think it’s the one thing I hate about summer is that you always have to shave! You can get away with not doing it as often during the colder months when you are bundled, but in the summer you just can’t do it!
Also, thanks for the little facts on Michigan. Never really thought about the fact that no matter where you are in Michigan you are within 85 miles of one of our great lakes!
I know! I loved learning those facts too!
And totally on the shaving front — not the most fun thing to do!
Haha, shaving while pregnant sure is a workout! This will be the first time I’m pregnant through an entire summer…so not looking forward to this part! A good razor is an absolute must!
Yes, shaving while pregnant is hard work! Fingers crossed July doesn’t get too hot for us 😉 This is my third summer baby. My dreams of having a spring baby never worked – ha!
I had a January, then a June, and then the twins were April. June wasn’t terribly bad…just really starting to get heart. I’m hoping our first real Michigan summer proves to be not quite as hot as Kansas or Missouri…winter here sure were an experience. I’ve been assured it was NOT a normal winter, lol.
It wasn’t a normal winter, Dani, so that’s true! I think if you can handle Kansas and Missouri, you can definitely handle a Michigan summer! And if worse comes to worse, go find a lake to jump in to! 😀
Oh thanks for the reminder! I need to go shave my legs for summer!!
Ha! Glad I could be of assistance to you 😉
Great tips for shaving. I loathe shaving. Love the fun facts, tfs.
You got it! And yes…Ugh for needing to shave! Though it is nice when legs actually feel smooth!
Just another reminder why winter wasn’t so bad after all. Not having to shave but I love the smells of all these products so it makes me want to use them more often.
Thanks for the great tips. We live 15 minutes from the ocean, so we are constantly going to the beach. During the week, I take the girls to the pool so I always have to have my legs summer ready. #client
Thanks for the tips! I live in London so my legs very rarely see sunshine but when they do, I tend to use men’s razors as I get a closer shave . Also, I had no idea that shaving down helps with irritation, so I will definitely be trying that out. Cheers for sharing!
