Is it just me, or has 2014 flown by? I just can’t believe it.
With November comes talk of turkey and the start of Christmas cheer.
So here goes, a list of fun for the most wonderful time of the year!
FAMILY FUN IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN IN NOVEMBER 2014
November 1 — $5 Day at The Henry Ford {Dearborn} – $5 admission per venue: Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour or a traditional IMAX. $5/person per venue. $5 for parking.
November 7 — Cranbrook Institute of Science {Bloomfield Hills} — Visit this gem for FREE after 5 p.m. on the first Friday of the month courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation.
November 7 – Harry the Dirty Dog with the Flint Youth Theatre {Flint} – Harry has everything a little white dog with black spots could want, but he hates taking baths. To avoid bath time he runs away and spends the day playing in the dirt. This new musical, based on the classic book, captures the whimsical humor and touching dedication to family. Show is at 7 p.m. Tickets: $10. Best suited for ages 3 and up.
November 7-9 – Aladdin Jr. at Warren Civic Theatre {Warren} – All of your favorite characters from the hit Disney film – Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar, the Genie, and more – are here in Disney’s Aladdin Jr., a musical adventure filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides. {Unsure of ticket cost as of now.}
November 7-16 {weekends} – Shrek The Musical by Community Theatre of Howell {Howell Freshman Campus} – In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Full of songs, great dancing and breath-taking scenery, Shrek The Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone! $14 for students, $16 for adults.
November 8 — Family-Friendly Film at the Michigan Theater – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang {Ann Arbor} – Part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series. 1:30 p.m. Adults – $10, seniors/children 13+ – $8. Free for kids 12 and under.
November 8 — Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinic {Nationwide} – Bring your child to Lowe’s to make a science lab! Register online in advance. FREE.
November 9 — FREE admission to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History {Detroit} – The Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History opens its doors for FREE, thanks to Charter One Bank.
Nov. 10 – Macy’s 2nd Mondays at The Henry Ford Museum {Dearborn} – Introduce your preschool children to the wonders of The Henry Ford — all before nap time {10 a.m. – noon}. Storytelling, live entertainment and dozens of hands-on activities related to some of the museum’s most memorable artifacts. November’s theme is Made in Michigan and will take place in The Henry Ford Museum. FREE for kids, adults can get 25 percent off their tickets with this coupon!
November 11 – $2 Tuesdays at Flint Children’s Museum {Flint} – General admission to the museum is just $2!
November 12-16 – Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents Built to Amaze {The Palace of Auburn Hills} – Come to the greatest show on earth! Tickets start at $14.
November 14 – A Christmas Carol at Meadowbrook Theatre {Rochester} – The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge returns to the stage for the 33rd year. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Tickets range from $16.50-$42.
November 20 – Dec. 31 — Wayne County Lightfest {Westland} — Lightfest features more than 47 giant animated displays and more than one million lights and is the Midwest’s largest light show. The complete route is more than four miles of Hines Dr. Lights run from 7-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 6-10 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Entry is $5 fee per vehicle.
November 21 — Detroit Christmas Tree Lighting in Campus Martius {Detroit} – Such a beautiful and FREE event! 5 p.m. – Midnight. Expect to pay parking fees.
November 21 — Silver Bells in the City {Lansing} — The premiere holiday event for the state of Michigan, which includes the lighting of Michigan’s official Christmas tree and a fireworks show over the State Capitol. 5-9 p.m. FREE.
November 21 – December 28 — Wonderland of Lights at Potter Park Zoo {Lansing} — Potter Park Zoo is transformed into a magical winter wonderland with thousands of holiday lights and extraordinary displays Thursdays-Sundays 5-8 p.m. Adults are $2/person, children ages 3-12 are $1 and children 3 and under are free.
November 22 – Tiny Tots Concert with the DSO featuring Gemini at Orchestra Hall {Detroit} – Sing along and learn the motions in this fun-filled family concert highlighted by Gemini’s sparkling songs about the everyday experiences of growing up. $12/ticket, 3 and under free.
November 22 – December 31 {Weekends} – Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — A million-plus LED lights cover trees, buildings and animal sculptures. Live entertainment, arts, crafts, ice carving and holiday train displays, too. $8 in advance, $10 at the door, children 2 and under free. $6 for parking.
November 21-23 – Pinkalicious The Musical at the Detroit City Theatre {Detroit} – In Pinkalicious The Musical, Pinkalicious can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. Various show dates/times. Tickets range from $15-$22.
November 27 – America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade {Detroit} — Rockin’ parade along Woodward Avenue complete with floats, giant balloons, and Santa. Parade starts at 8:45 a.m. at Woodward Ave. and Kirby St. and ends at Campus Martius Park. $35-$55 for advance tickets/grandstand seating, or FREE for general admission. Expect to pay parking fees as well.
November 28 – Fantasy of Lights Parade {Howell} — Festive nighttime parade in downtown Howell with each float illuminated with a minimum of 5,000 holiday lights. Entertainment and activities such as cookie decorating, visits with Santa, live reindeer and music begin at 4 p.m. The parade kicks off at 7 p.m. FREE.
November 28-30 – The Nutcracker at The Detroit Opera House {Detroit} – Journey to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy as one of the nation’s most respected dance companies returns to the Detroit Opera House with their enchanting interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s magical holiday classic. Tickets range from $38-$68.
November 19-23 – Treasure Island at the Wild Swan Theater {Ann Arbor} – Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island spins a tale of swashbuckling adventure, complete with buried treasure and a lot of mystery and suspense. Young Jim Hawkins comes of age under the tutelage of pirates like Long John Silver, discovering that goodness and evil are not always what they seem. $10/youth/seniors, $15/adults, $3 for children 2 and under.
November 8-30 {Saturdays and Sundays} – Pinocchio at the Marquis Theatre {Northville} – See this classic tale brought to life on stage! $9/tickets. {No children under age 3}
November 29 – Kids Workshop at The Home Depot {Nationwide} – Build a Give and Save Bank! This hands-on workshop is designed for children ages 5 – 12. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Register online in advance. FREE.
November 30 — Family-Friendly Film at the State Theater – My Neighborhor Totoro {Ann Arbor} – Part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series. 1:30 p.m. Adults – $10, seniors/children 13+ – $8. Free for kids 12 and under.
