Looking for something fun to do this month? There are LOTS of great icy fun and snow-centric events happening across Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and Lansing…and also LOTS of shows inside where it’s warm! I can’t wait to check out a few of these events out with my family 🙂
Things To Do in Southeast Michigan in January 2015:
January 2 — FREE admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science After 5 p.m. {Bloomfield Hills} — Free admission courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation, The Café and Observatory are open, and planetarium and bat shows are offered at an additional charge.
January 3 — Kid’s Workshop at Home Depot {Nationwide} — Make a mini sleigh for FREE at Home Depot. Hands-on workshops are designed for children ages 5 – 12 and take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Advance registration encouraged.
January 10 — Cold Rush {Warren} — A family fun event in Warren’s City Square featuring ice sculptures, a petting zoo, an ice skating show, live music and more. FREE.
January 9-11 — Plymouth Ice Festival {Plymouth} — The Plymouth Ice Festival features ice sculptures, live entertainment, activities and food. FREE entry.
January 10 — Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam at Ford Field {Detroit} — Monster Jam stars the biggest performers on four wheels: Monster Jam Trucks! The twelve-feet-tall, ten-thousand-pound machines will bring you to your feet, racing and repping up a custom-designed track full of obstacles to soar over or smash through. 7 p.m. show. Tickets range from $10-$55.
January 11 — Family-Friendly Film at the Michigan Theater – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles {Ann Arbor} — Part of the Toyota Family-Friendly Film Series. 1:30 p.m. Adults – $10, seniors/children 13+ – $8. Free for kids 12 and under.
January 11 — Rubber Ducky Day at the Howell Aquatic Center {Howell} — Celebrate National Rubber Ducky Day a day early with this fun-filled event to celebrate the date Rubber Ducks were invented! Prizes for those finding specially marked ducks. $4/person {$15/family maximum}. 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Advance registration required.
January 16-18 — Blue Man Group at The Wharton Center {East Lansing} — Blue Man Group is best known for their wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts which combine comedy, music, and technology to produce a unique form of entertainment. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Tickets start at $39.
January 17-24 — North American International Auto Show {Detroit} — Car fanatic or not, this is one of the premier events to attend in the Detroit area! See more than 500 vehicles on display, representing the most innovative designs in the world. Tickets: Adults – $13/tickets, seniors and children 7-12 – $7, children under 6 are free.
January 17-18 — Wild Winter Arctic Adventure at the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — Wild Winter Arctic Adventure features ice carving demonstrations, arctic-themed arts and crafts, games and entertainment. All activities are free with zoo admission and take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ford Education Center. Admission range: Free for 2 and under, otherwise priced $10-$14.
January 18-23 — Ann Arbor Restaurant Week {Ann Arbor} — Get discounted meals at a number of fab, high-end restaurants around Ann Arbor. Perfect for a date night!
January 19 — Larry Cat In Space at the Museum of Natural History Planetarium {Ann Arbor} — A playful, imaginative cartoon about an inquisitive cat who stows away aboard a space ship and visits the Moon. Primarily targeted at grades K-3 but enjoyable for everyone, the show teaches several things about the Moon and includes a short live night sky discussion. Free, but $6 suggested donation.
January 22-24 — Strenga Nona and the Magic Pasta Pot at the Wild Swan Theater {Ann Arbor} — Strega Nona is a story that will satisfy your appetite for laughter and fun. Strega Nona has a magical pasta pot which only she can control. Come see what silliness ensues when Big Anthony does not listen to her, causing the streets of their small village to fill with pasta. Nationally renowned artist Chris Roberts-Antieau designed the sets, costumes and props for this not-to-be missed production. $8/child, $12/adult.
January 23 — Harlem Globetrotters World Tour {East Lansing} — The iconic Harlem Globetrotters are coming to The Breslin Center with their family show, featuring some of the greatest athletes on the planet. With incredible ball handling wizardry, amazing rim-rattling dunks and trick shots, side-splitting comedy and unequaled on-court fan interaction, this must-see event is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Tickets range from $21-$83.
January 23 – February 16 — Sesame Street Live’s “Make A New Friend” {Detroit} — Visit the Fox Theatre as Elmo, Grover, Abby Cadabby, and their Sesame Street friends welcome Chamki, Grover’s friend from India, to Sesame Street. Together, they explore the universal fun of friendship and celebrate cultural similarities, from singing and dancing, to sharing cookies. Each performance is 90 minutes of singing, dancing and audience participation, including a 15-minute intermission. Ticket prices range from $15-$68 and are available here.
January 24-25 — LEGO®Palooza at Impression 5 Science Center {Lansing} — Play and create at Impression 5’s annual LEGO®Palooza event! Let your imagination run wild in the free-build area, participate in a balance challenge, be a part of an awesome photo-op, and much more. Pre-register in advance to reserve a spot. Tickets range from $7-$17.
January 24 — Rollers and Strollers Lunch and Skate with Princess Elsa {Holt} — Visit EDRU Skatarama for a princess skate and lunch for children ages 7 and under. 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. $8 {includes skate rental, hot dog, drink and snack}. Non-walking infants are $1 {lunch and snack not included}.
January 25 — Rhythmic Circus at The Whiting {Flint} — Home grown hoofers from Minneapolis hit the road with a trunk full of tap shoes, funky costumes and a big brass band, ready to burst onto the stage for Feet Don’t Fail Me Now. “Heatbox” the human beatbox, joins the swingin’ seven-piece funk band to accompany each tap, shuffle and stomp with a clang, riff and refrain. 3 p.m. performance. Tickets are $35 for all ages.
January 25 — Winterfest {Oak Park} — Visit the Oak Park Community Center for fun including once carving, a bonfire, ice skating, sleigh rides, a petting farm and more. 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. FREE.
January 23-25 — Fire & Ice Festival {Rochester} — Celebrating all things winter, the Fire & Ice Festival in downtown Rochester has an ice sculpture show, beer tent, tube sledding run, fireworks, dog sled demos, ice skating, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, carriage rides, and Downtown Rochester’s Big, Bright Light Show. FREE entry.
January 30 — The Rainbow Fish with the Flint Youth Theatre {Flint} — Marcus Pfister’s bestselling book is brought to life onstage in a delightful musical about the value of friendship. Show is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
January 31 — Hartland Family Winterfest {Hartland} — Visit Heritage Park from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. for skating, sledding, snowman building and a bonfire. Indoor activities will be held as well, including musical performances, a craft show and kids crafts. FREE.
January 31 — Family Fun Festival {Howell} — This free event hosted by From The Ground On Up and community businesses will offer a fun filled afternoon of games, activities, food, face painting, a bounce house, a sensory station, arts & crafts and more. 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Cleary University. FREE.

If you can, please add the Hartland Family Winterfest on January 31 from Noon until 8. This free event includes ice skating, sledding, fireworks, a bonfire with smores, a snowman building contest, igloo building, snow angel painting, disc golf, ice bowling, tundra volleyball and much more.
