Just writing the word ‘May’ makes me SO happy. It’s one of my favorite months of the year for many reasons — the flowers peeking out, the smell of fresh-cut grass, and the return of many farmer’s markets are just a few. Luckily, there is plenty to do with kids this month too!

May 1 — Into the Wild LIVE with Jack Hanna at The Whiting {Flint} — Learn more about the show at the post linked above.
May 1 — Free Admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science {Bloomfield Hills} — Visit after 5 p.m. the first Friday of every month, courtesy of the MASCO Corporation, for FREE.
May 1 — Touch a Truck at Drake Sports {West Bloomfield} — From 6-9 p.m., kids can get a firsthand look at police, fire, construction, trash and all the really cool work vehicles we see every day, but don’t get the chance to touch. Several food trucks will also be on site. FREE.
May 1-3 — Spring Fling Fest {Mason} — Visit Mason to experience a 5K run, a craft show on the courthouse square, pie sale, duck race and much more. FREE.
May 2 — LEGO Bricks Build Off {Ann Arbor} — The Ann Arbor Art Center presents their Lego Exhibition. View all of the LEGO Bricks creations that were submitted by the finalists in the Ultimate Lego Bricks Build-Off Contest and vote for your favorite! Families are invited to participate in a craft project and LEGO activities during the exhibition. 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. FREE.
May 2-3 — Faerie Day Festival at Heavenly Scent Herb Farm {Fenton} — Visit this beautiful farm for fun with fairies! Story telling, dancers, workshops and more. $1/person for entry.
May 2-3 — Victorian Days {Grand Ledge} — Salute the Victorian era with a ball, maypole dance, high tea, Civil War encampment, riverboat rides, carriage rides, period craft demonstrations and more. FREE entry, some activities have a fee.
May 2 — Lunch with Princess Joslyn at Canterbury Village {Lake Orion} – Singing, dancing, story time and lunch with a princess! 11 a.m. $18/person.
May 2 — Home Depot Kids Workshop — Picket Fence Photo Frame {Nationwide} — Come learn how to build a picket fence photo frame. FREE hands-on workshops; designed for children ages 5 – 12, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. All kid get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Register online in advance.
May 2 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Drop into a Michael’s Craft Store and take home a completed project! Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun, including supplies. 10 a.m. – noon. Ages 3 and up. This day’s project is a Mother’s Day wood frame.
May 2 – Fly Guy and Other Stories at The Wharton {East Lansing} – This inventive musical revue is based on favorite children’s books and may include Fly Guy meets Fly Girl, in which Fly Guy has met his match, and he is totally impressed…and totally smitten. Tickets: $9. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
May 5 — FREE LEGO® Mini Model Build: LEGO Koala {LEGO Store in Somerset Collection in Troy} — Visit your local LEGO Store on the first Tuesday of every month after 5 p.m. and you can learn how to build a cool mini model, and take it home – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only. One per child. Event is open to children ages 6-14 only. FREE.
May 8 — Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial Flyover {Royal Oak} — Honor WWII veterans by attending this flyover, complete with local bands, military vehicles, food trucks and more. FREE.
May 9 — Stamp Out Hunger {Nationwide} — Leave non-persishables out by your mailbox and help a local family in need. Learn more here.
May 9 — Historic Memorial Day at the Michigan Historical Museum {Lansing} — Learn about the Civil War origins of Memorial Day and find out how Michigan communities honored soldiers during some of the first Memorial Day celebrations. This program is included with museum admission and is part of the Second Saturdays for Families program, which features hands-on activities related to the exhibits. Children 5 and under are FREE, youth {ages 2-17} are $2, seniors {65+} are $4 and adults are $6.
May 9 — Fly Guy and Other Stories at the Michigan Theater {Ann Arbor} — A musical revue featuring a wide variety of contemporary and classic children’s book favorites, including Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl, Diary of a Worm, Fluffy the Classroom Guinea Pig, Horace & Morris But Mostly Dolores, Kitten’s First Full Moon, Lilly’s Big Day, and Paper Bag Princess. Show recommended for age 5+. Show is at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.
May 9 — Enchanted Princess Ball {St. Clair Shores} — The Enchanted Princess Ball is a theatrical performance that transports little princesses into a magical fairytale world! Classic stories are retold as favorite characters are brought to life from the pages of favorite books to the stage. Awaiting your arrival will be: Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell, and more. Tickets are $19.50 for both adults and children and should be purchased in advance at the link above. This event will be at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores.
May 9 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Drop into a Michael’s Craft Store and take home a completed project! Just $2 per child for 30 minutes of creative craft fun, including supplies. 10 a.m. – noon. Ages 3 and up. This day’s project is a birthday hat.
May 9 — Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinic {Nationwide} — Bring your kids to Lowe’s to build a Mother’s Day planter kit! Workshop takes place at 10 a.m. and advance registration encouraged {link above}. FREE.
May 11 — Macy’s 2nd Mondays at Greenfield Village {Dearborn} – Introduce your preschool children to the wonders of The Henry Ford — all before nap time {10 a.m. – noon}. Storytelling, live entertainment and dozens of hands-on activities related to some of the museum’s most memorable artifacts. May’s theme is “Springs’ in Bloom,” and the event will take place in Greenfield Village. FREE for kids, adults can get 25 percent off their tickets with this coupon.
May 12 — FREE Cone Day at Haagen-Dazs Shops {Nationwide} — Visit the Troy location between the hours of 4-8 p.m. for a FREE delicious cone!
May 15 — Pinkalicious the Musical at Oakland University {Rochester} — The popular book series about a pink-loving little girl is brought to life on stage. $6/ticket. {My daughter LOVED this show!}
May 15-17 — East Lansing Art Festival {East Lansing} — This event brings together more than 200 artists. Musical acts perform and a food court is available. FREE.
May 16 — Kindness Safari at the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — Hunt for kindness and get some cute trinkets at this neat event for families, sponsored by KIND and Zulily. Free with zoo admission.
May 16 — Open Barn at Bowers School Farm {Bloomfield Hills} — Visit the barn from 12 to 4 p.m. to check out animals, go on a wagon ride, take a horse or pony ride, feed a goat, and shop for goodies. FREE {some activities have a small fee}.
May 16 — Storytime at the University of Michigan Art Museum {Ann Arbor} — Children ages 4 to 7 are invited to hear a story in the galleries. Stories will be followed by a short activity responding to the art on display. Parents must accompany children. Siblings are welcome to join the group. Meet in front of the UMMA Store. 11:15 a.m. – noon. FREE, but donation suggested.
May 16 — Butterfly Festival at U of M Museum of Natural History {Ann Arbor} — Visit for a day of fun with butterflies. Kids can meet live butterflies, help plant a pollinator garden and make their own wings to take home. Free, but $6 suggested donation.
May 16 — Kids Day in the Park {Rochester} — Visit Bloomer Park in Rochester for car seat checks, bike safety, fire department water play and vehicles, child finger printing and more. FREE.

May 22 – Sept. 7 — Dinosauria returns to the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — Forty life-like animatronic dinosaurs that spit, snarl and move will take up residence at the Detroit Zoo to provide a thrilling experience for visitors of all ages. Sixty-five million years after the last dinosaurs roamed the earth, these prehistoric creatures still capture the imagination and wonder of adults and kids alike. Additional cost combined with zoo admission, which ranges from free {2 and under} to $14.

May 28-31 — Birmingham Village Fair {Birmingham} — The entire family will enjoy four fun-filled days at this year’s Village Fair. Find entertainment, carnival rides, games and food on the streets surrounding Shain Park in downtown Birmingham. $15 wristbands available for unlimited ride access.
May 29-31 — Belle Isle Grand Prix {Detroit} — Four different auto racing competitions rolled into one. A fanzone and pre-race events build excitement. Tickets range from $15-$75 for a single day pass. Many options available.

May 30 — Be A Tourist In Your Own Town {Lansing} – This day, created by the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau, allows event participants to visit more than 70 local attractions and one-day only special tours that include: Impression 5 Science Center, Potter Park Zoo, the State Capitol Building, the Michigan Historical Museum and more. Participants can purchase a “passport” for $1 at various locations throughout the community during May. May 30 — Tour the Michigan State Capitol {Lansing} — Celebrate the return of Saturday tours of the capitol and visit the building for FREE.

May 30-31 — Weekend of Wonder at Longway Planetarium {Flint} — Visit Longway Planetarium as it celebrates the Grand Reopening with a Weekend of Wonder! Various shows in the radically different, renovated planetarium theater and other activities are FREE compliments of ITC Holdings.
May 30-31 — Down on the Farm at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad {Flint} — Farm chores are hard work and one hundred years ago, they were even more challenging. This weekend, visit the Village farm and experience some of the important 19th century farm task, with the help of our farm volunteers. Watch the precise work of sheep shearing and try your hand at a paper craft. Help make sweet, creamy butter and if gardening is your pleasure, you can help plant the Village garden. Children 2 and under are FREE, kids 2-12 are $8, seniors {60+} are $9, adults are $10. {Add a train ride for a few extra dollars!}
May 31 — Taste of Ann Arbor {Ann Arbor} — This annual community event features dozens of local restaurants offering visitors a bite sized taste of what they do best. The event is FREE, family-friendly and open to the public, with food costs ranging from 50 cents to $4. On Main Street in the heart of Ann Arbor.
