With beautiful weather hopefully continuing in the week ahead, the timing for the Shell Eco-marathon in Detroit couldn’t be better, and I couldn’t be more proud to say ‘the D’ is home to this amazing event. It’s the perfect event to attend in observation of Earth Day, too!
ABOUT THE SHELL ECO-MARATHON IN DETROIT
The Shell Eco-marathon challenges future automotive engineers and scientists to push the limits of energy efficiency and innovate solutions to the world’s mobility challenges.
This weekend more than 1,000 high school and university students from 129 teams across the Americas – including several teams from Michigan – will gather in downtown Detroit and inside Cobo Center with a fleet of custom-built, ultra-energy efficient cars to compete in the 10th annual event.
A bit more about the concept:
Student-built vehicles have achieved more than 3,500 miles per gallon in the Americas challenge. How cool is that?!
Teams competing in the UrbanConcept class will compete in all seven energy source categories: gasoline, diesel, ethanol, GTL, CNG, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell, and get a chance to compete in a finale race on the world stage in London.
FREE FAMILY FUN
Inside Cobo Center, visitors are invited to The Make Zone, an interactive journey of today and tomorrow’s energy and mobility. This is FREE and open to the public, and will offer hands-on activities celebrating science, technology, engineering, math and energy — for ALL ages.
The Make Zone will feature interactive exhibits designed to improve understanding of energy sources and their related issues. Shell scientists will be onsite to showcase demonstrations on the main stage. A Dual Fuel Car, a Deepwater Virtual Reality experience, a 3D Gear VR fuel journey through an engine in a Shell Simulated Lab environment are a few examples of activities that will be happening.
Additionally, the event will feature special musical guest performances from Detroit’s own NUCLASSICA and the Selected of God choir over the weekend {both are absolutely amazing!}.
