It’s the month of LOVE and it’s also a month for some great things for families to do around Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and Lansing. Personally, I’m pretty stoked to sneak in a few fun shows and attend my first mother-son dance with my little guy!

Things To Do in February 2017 in Southeast Michigan
Through February 12 — Sesame Street Live {Detroit} — Sesame Street Live “Make a New Friend” offers a fun-filled, interactive learning experience, including up-close and furry interactions on the audience floor! Like television’s Sesame Street, each Sesame Street Live production features timeless tunes and lessons for all ages. Tickets range from $17-$70.
February 1-26 — The Lion King at The Detroit Opera House {Detroit} — Visit this post for the details!
February 2 — Groundhog Day with Michigan’s Official Groundhog, Woody, at the Howell Nature Center {Howell} — Get your spring forecast straight from Woody, Michigan’s Official Groundhog! The Howell Conference & Nature Center will host a special celebration starting at 7:45 a.m., with the long-awaited prediction coming at 8:15 a.m. sharp.
February 3 — FREE admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science After 5 p.m. {Bloomfield Hills} — Free admission after 5 p.m. courtesy of the MASCO Corporation Foundation. The Café and Observatory are open, and planetarium and bat shows are offered at an additional charge.
February 4 — Kid’s Workshop at Home Depot {Nationwide} – Make a heart box for FREE at Home Depot. Hands-on workshops are designed for children ages 5 – 12 and take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Advance registration encouraged {link above}.
February 4 — Adventures in Winterland {Flint} — Visit Flint Iceland Arena to celebrate U.S. Figure Skating’s National Skating Month with us and enjoy free activities such as ice skating lessons, group fitness classes, cooking with kids demo, snowshoeing and more! FREE.
February 4 — Wild Winter Weekends at the Detroit Zoo {Royal Oak} — Wild Winter Weekends features arctic-themed arts and crafts, games and entertainment. All activities are free with zoo admission and take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ford Education Center. Admission range: Free for 2 and under, otherwise priced $10-$14.
February 4 — Lunar New Year Festival {Howell} — This event will celebrate the Lunar New Year and will feature Asian cuisine, culture, art and games and a Dragon 5K, all while promoting local businesses. Most activities are FREE.
February 4 — Community Snow Day {Milford} — Visit Central Park in Milford from 3-5 p.m. for snow-centric fun including winter games, crafts, snowshoeing, a bonfire and more. FREE.
February 4 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Visit Michael’s to make a Sprout Valentine’s treat bag. Kids 3 and up can enjoy a quick project and take home a finished masterpiece. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. $2 per child, supplies included.
February 4, 11, 18, 25 — FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art {Flint} — This museum is FREE to visit every Saturday thanks to First Merit Bank.
February 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 — FREE Dinosaur Tours at the University of Michigan Natural History Museum {Ann Arbor} — Visit the museum at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for a free, 30-minute docent-led tour of the dinosaur exhibits. Sign up on the day of the tour. Limited to 15 people. Sponsored by U-M Credit Union.
February 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 — Detroit Institute of Awesome At the DIA — Visit the DIA for kids activities. Make an art project, take a guided family tour, enjoy games and attend a special family program in the afternoon. 12-4 p.m. Residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties receive free unlimited general museum admission. Others: $12.50/adults, $8/seniors, $6/youth {6-17}, kids 5 and under are free.
February 5 — FREE Day at Flint Children’s Museum {Flint} – Visit this gem for FREE from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. thanks to Kohl’s and Hurley.
February 7 & 8 — LEGO Monthly Build at Somerset Collection {Troy} — Build a LEGO® Raccoon model and take it home for FREE after! Must register in advance. This event is open to children ages 6-14 only.
February 9-11 — Drum Me A Story at Wild Swan Theater {Ann Arbor} — A delightful collection of African tales performed through storytelling, acting, dancing, and drumming. Colorful costumes, masks, and traditional music will delight and teach our young fans, with lots of opportunities for audience participation. Geared for K-4th grade students. $10/children/seniors and $12 for adults.
February 10-12 — Ice Festival and Fireworks {Utica} — Ice sculptures, children’s activities, and more. FREE.

February 10-19 — Peter Pan Jr. at Starlight Theater {Waterford} — Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale and featuring an unforgettable Broadway score by Morris “Moose” Charlap and Jule Styne, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. Adult tickets are $14.99, seniors are $13, students are $12, and children are $11.
February 11 — Chocolate Extravaganza {Chelsea} — The family-friendly event offers chocolate and Valentine-themed treats and activities in more than 30 local shops, restaurants, galleries and cafes. The stores each have their own distinct atmosphere and carry a sweeping variety of goods, which makes shopping a fun experience. FREE to attend.

February 11-12 — LEGO®Palooza at Impression 5 {Lansing} — Come enjoy all things LEGO®, including: a free-build area, rocket car race, LEGO®-inspired arcade room, marble rollercoaster run, LEGO® key chain and bracelet station, 3-D building wall, and more! Pre-registration is not required, but secures your space and ensures quicker admission. Entry for non-members is $20 for kids 2 & up and adults are $5.
February 12 — My Turn: Sensory-Friendly Sunday {Ann Arbor} — Families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder are invited to Therapeutic Riding, Inc. (TRI) from 2-4 p.m.for a FREE, sensory-friendly event to learn all about horses. Participants will be able to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of a working horse farm. FREE. Registration required.
February 12 — FREE admission to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History {Detroit} — Enter for FREE thanks to the DTE Energy Foundation. {Perfect for teaching about African-American History Month!}
February 12 — Valentine’s Day Elsa and Anna Lunch {Lake Orion} — Visit King’s Court Castle for singing, dancing, story time and lunch with the Elsa and Anna at 12 p.m. $20/person.
February 13 — MSU Bug House Open House {East Lansing} — Visit Michigan State University for their Bug House open house and learn all about creepy crawly creatures! FREE.
February 14-15 — Cinderella The Musical at The Whiting {Flint} — Tony Award®- winning Broadway musical with a contemporary take on the classic tale. February 16 — Fairy Tea at Crazy Wisdom Book Store {Ann Arbor} — Children, ages 2-8, and their families are welcome for tea and cookies served by real fairies! Celebrate with enchanting fairies as they serve tea, treats, and magic. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. events. Registration is required. $11/person. {Babies 18 months and younger are free.}

February 18 — Fire & Ice with Spice {Clawson} — Visit downtown Clawson to see fire eaters, performers, ice carving competitors, and a chili cook-off. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. FREE.

February 18-20 & 25-26 — LEGO BATMAN Movie Days at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan {Auburn Hills} — Visit LDC Michigan for special games and activities, from a themed scavenger hunt in MINILAND to a large-scale mosaic build featuring characters from the movie and photo opportunities with LEGO Batman. All included with attraction admission price.
February 25 — Dog Gone Fun Doggie Storytime and Crafts with Cowboy ALEX {Royal Oak} — Visit the Royal Oak Senior Center to listen to Cowboy Alex read fun stories about dogs. For kids 3 – 7 years old. 11 a.m. – Noon. $5/child.
February 25 — Brick Bash {Ann Arbor} — Brick Bash is a public, hands-on LEGO-building exhibition for all ages. See amazing creations made out of LEGO: Trains, cities, robots, art, vehicles, construction equipment, and more. Build anything you want at the huge tables covered with LEGO and Bionicle parts, and a separate Duplo play area for the little ones. $5/person or $20 for a family of four or more.
