One of our favorite annual traditions is picking blueberries at Hazen’s Farm in Howell, Michigan.
First of all, blueberries are amazing to eat…Full of vitamins C and A and antioxidants. Second, they are SO easy to pick. Of all the u-pick fruit, this is my favorite with kids because it’s quick picking and there is no squatting required 😉
Aren’t they purty?
Hazen’s Farm in Howell, Michigan
I’ve been visiting Hazen’s Farm since I was a little girl, so I have many fond memories of picking {and eating} the berries. The family that runs it has been there for three generations, and is so welcoming and kind — and the fruit grown there is delicious. It has been so amazing watching how the farm has blossomed over the years, and now attracts people from all over southeast Michigan.
Hazen’s is strictly a U-Pick farm {though you can purchase already picked fruit there}, and they offer blueberries, red raspberries and peaches.
The blueberries are not certified organic, but I’ve been assured it’s as close as it’s going to get. {The fees to become certified organic are a bit crazy for a small farm.} It’s very high-quality fruit!
To pick, just park in the farm’s dirt lot, walk up to the red building, and grab a blue bucket from an employee, who will point you in the direction to go.
Tip for parents: I usually bring a few extra pails for my kids in case they are low on buckets since my kids like to make just about anything a competition!
The fields are well-marked and there is a clean bathroom to use before heading out. Little feet will be happy to not walk very far to get to the field either. It’s a manageable outdoor activity with little ones, which makes this mama to three busy {yet easily overwhelmed} kiddos happy!
The season for blueberries is typically mid-to-end of July. Families can easily pick several pounds in a short amount of time. With that said, it’s definitely best to pick in the morning before full sun.
Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen, and a little bug spray may not hurt either.
Inside the red building where you pay, Sweet Maria’s offer pies, popsicles, cookies, and some of the most amazing blueberry ice cream ever. It’s seriously worth the $7 it costs for a pint – promise.
And after picking in the sun, it may just be the reward you deserve!
Hazen’s is located at 1144 Peavy Rd., Howell, MI 48843. Call ahead for the hours, which may change due to picking conditions. The farm is closed on Mondays.
Happy picking!
