Maybe you’ve visited our capital city in grade school, but if you haven’t yet, a Michigan State Capitol tour is a bucket list MUST and perfect excuse to visit Lansing.
I mean, look at the outside architecture of the building alone…all the heart eyes. The building opened in 1879 and hasn’t stopped being a beacon of beauty on the Lansing skyline ever since.
Something about the Victorian era of fine craftsmanship, elegance and grand opulence just sets one’s heart a-flutter, eh?
Everything about this building is grand — from the ceiling right down to the carpet. Seriously…check out the colors and details. It’s hard not to look down often because the carpets are incredible throughout.
And don’t stop at the carpets either…The glass floor, while a bit freaky at first, is also a MUST.
Make sure to lay down on the glass like a crazy person and look up at the dome…You won’t be disappointed by the incredible view.
Did you know our state capitol holds a special place in American history as one of the first to be topped by a cast iron dome? Pretty cool. It’s definitely something I look for when visiting other capital cities across the U.S.
Incredible details can be seen throughout the entire National Historic Landmark. Personally, I love checking out the Governor’s office — this is where bills are signed into law and where the true magic happens.
But of course the The Senate and House of Representative chambers {below} are pretty astounding, too. I’ve never seen them in session, but that could be pretty cool to witness should your visit be timed perfectly.
This building is a prime example of the incredible attention to detail that was present during 1800’s design and architecture. As the saying goes “They just don’t make them like they used to,” — it’s so true in this case!
In the summer, make sure to check out the beautiful gardens surrounding the building. There are plenty of neat spots to take photos or have a picnic.
Best part about visiting our capitol? It’s FREE to tour!
TOUR INFORMATION
FREE guided tours are available beginning every half hour {9 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m., etc.} during days the building is open. The capitol is closed on all government/standard holidays and on Sundays.
Tours are approximately 45-60 minutes. Guided tour times are subject to change daily based on staffing levels. It’s worth it IMO to do a guided tour — the docents are full of fantastic knowledge.
Call the Capitol Tour Service at (517) 373-2353 in advance to verify guided tour times.
Self-Guided tours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Visitors to the Capitol should plan to enter the building via the east {front} entrance throughout the duration of the Capitol Infrastructure Upgrade Project.
Learn more about a tour by visiting here or following the Michigan State Capitol on Facebook.
PARKING
I’ve never had an issue parking in downtown Lansing — there is plenty of street parking and parking garages, which typically cost $1.25/hour.
MORE FUN IN LANSING
If you have the kids in tow, check out these other things to do while in Lansing. There are plenty of free/cheap attractions. If you’re on a date, here’s ideas for enjoying the city with your love.
When is the last time you visited tour state capitol?
That looks really pretty. I’ve been to Lansing before (East Lansing, to visit MSU) but have never actually been to the state capitol … will have to go one day!
My mom guides those tours!! Isn’t so fun to visit? Im hoping the twins can go this year with their classrooms!
I’ve walked around the building for work matters before but never took a tour. After reading your post makes me think I probably should make some time for a tour next time I’m up there for a meeting or make an effort to take the kids up there for a road trip. I’ve been thinking of them to the Michigan History Center as well which is just down the street.
The glass floor looks nice. Unique and special indeed. Michigan State Capitol tour sounds awesome!
Thank you Mrs. Weber. This came right on time!
