April is Autism Awareness Month, so what better time to share about the amazing resources we have for families with Autism Spectrum Disorders {ASD} and other sensory sensitivities right here southeast Michigan and beyond?
One of my daughters has been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder {SPD} and social communication disorder, which are both characteristics of ASD, so this is a cause near and dear to me. These children, their incredible brains, and the amazing parents that advocate fiercely for them are my heroes!
My gal can be a complete rock star while out, or completely struggle. Places that are crowded, noisy, have intense smells or bright light can cause major meltdowns, while other times, she craves that type of chaotic environment. Sometimes we’re not sure until we are somewhere, so we try to be hyper-aware of possible triggers, and do our best to arm ourselves with sensory and distraction tools, just in case.
I’m ecstatic there are so many destinations out there that cater to the needs of sensory seekers and avoiders, as well as autistic individuals. The more I’ve learned about this world, the more I’ve realized its beauty and complexity. To see the world in a different light is truly a gift, though it can be stressful to those who have minds process the world in a unique manner.
Whether your child has ASD, sensory processing issues, or any kind of special need, these are places that need to be on your radar. Three cheers for places that cater to the needs of ALL!
