When I found out I was having a second baby girl, I decided to re-use the decor I had for my first baby girl. I didn’t want to spend the money for a fancy nursery that I knew she’d outgrow in two years.
…But then time got away from us, and I put off re-doing her room, which was painted light pink. Turns out my gal despises pink and all things girly, so she’s been asking for some time for me to change-up her room.
First, she wanted me to paint it blue. And then she wanted a space theme with stars on the ceiling. Girl knows what she likes, what can I say? I love that about her, and her decisiveness made shopping easy!
Only thing is, as I began scouring Pinterest for ideas, everything I found was so boyish or toddler-ish or SO costly. I had a $200 budget to do it ALL — including paint, bedding, curtains, and decor, so I had to use my money wisely.
With the help of Amazon, Five Below, Big Lots, Jo-Ann’s, Home Goods, IKEA, Wish, and the Facebook Marketplace, we pieced together a pretty cool room!
We originally ordered a different duvet cover with more purple from Amazon, but when this one {affiliate link} arrived, my girl fell hard and decided she loved it, so I rolled with it and let it set the tone for the room. It’s not the greatest quality, but for less than $30, we love it!
From there we found a couple of neat items from Five Below including the white canopy, moon mirror, and big letter K.
Having too much of a theme is tricky with young kids, so we just grabbed a few inexpensive accents that could be swapped out down the road if/when she changes her style. We found some cute pieces second-hand, and I was able to print off some nebula photos and put them in old frames we had.
The giant astronaut piece was the priciest item, coming in at $29.99 from Home Goods. I was able to score white light-up letters spelling SPACE at Jo-Ann’s for $2 each after Christmas to bring in the theme a little more.
Instead of book cases in our kid’s rooms, we have book bins — that way when they become a bit disorganized they aren’t such an eyesore! Big Lots has a great selection of bins for great prices.
Additionally, I was able to score a $15 headboard from the Facebook Marketplace, which I painted dark blue to tie everything together.
After visiting IKEA for something else, I figured their collection of funking lighting would be perfect so we settled for a hanging light for $25. It was super easy to install too!
Finally, the blue stick-on stars on the ceiling were just $1 from Wish.
All in all, she is thrilled with how it turned out, and I am excited to knock out one more house project.
Do your kids have a themed room? How did you keep costs down?
Great job! I LOVE that she chose such a fun theme, I hated pink as a young girl also and was thrilled when I was finally able to change my room
I’ve never been a big pink fan myself 😉 I was glad to find some awesome options out there!
It’s so cute! Great job putting it together on a budget.
Thanks so much girl!
