Did you know…According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of injury death to children ages one to four — and the second leading cause of injury death for children ages one to 14?
That statistic is pretty frightening, right? Especially if you are a parent in Michigan, which is surrounded by hundreds of lakes.
The month of May is Water Safety Awareness Month, and today I’m sharing some tips for water safety with the help of Goldfish Swim School. Because let’s be real — this topic impacts every family, and all children need to have the skills to be safe around water.
Water Safety Tips from Goldfish Swim School
- Anytime kids are near water, appoint a “water watcher” who will avoid cell phones, books, and other distractions, so they can keep an eye on the kids while they swim. Drowning can happen fast, so this is so, so important.
- The American Red Cross says the number one things parents can do to promote water safety is to enroll them in swim lessons. During the summer, Goldfish Swim School offers both perpetual lessons and weekly Jump Start Clinics. These are perfect to practice those swim skills!
- Remember that floats, noodles, and inner tubes should NEVER count as a life-saving device — they are toys! Life jackets should be worn and U.S. Coast Guard approved. {Please remember this while boating, especially!}
- Make water safety FUN! Goldfish is so fantastic for this since they use their “Science of SwimPlay” program. Goldfish instructors use props, toys, prizes, and more to engage kids. Check out a family swim to work on water safety skills and have some fun together. {My kids are SO tricky to engage at times and tend to be super sensitive, and they have done fantastic with Goldfish. They truly have the best, most patient instructors!}
Not only is your child sure to love their Goldfish experience, as a parent you will receive peace of mind knowing they are safer in the water.

We have three little boys that definitely need to be starting swim lessons. I hear amazing things about Goldfish. Love that their pools are nice and warm, and that their every location is so welcoming and kid friendly. I see the ribbons earned when they reach the new levels – love the incentives and encouragement!

Okemos would be a great location to visit. The jump start clinic is exactly what I think my kids need to feel confident in the water.
