Always buy a good pair of shoes and a good bed. If you aren’t in one, you’re in the other. ~ Gloria Hunniford
I read this quote in a Reader’s Digest as a kid and it has stuck with me ever since. I try to stick with comfortable and practical shoes that will last, and a few years ago we bought an amazing mattress. Sleep is crucial in this house and it’s incredibly noticeable when any of us are lacking it, so I’m all for investing in it where possible!
However, my allergies have been downright terrible this season and I’ve lost a lot of sleep lately. My kids are finally at an age where they usually sleep through the night and now *I* am waking up due to sneezing or a runny nose. I have seasonal allergies, as well as being allergic to dust, mold, grass, trees, etc…Pretty much all the things in nature I love the most! It’s frustrating, especially during summer when I need all my energy so I can keep up with my kiddos.
We have been working on our bedroom hygiene thanks to AllerEase bedding products, and are now putting to practice the following tips. Maybe they can help your sleep hygiene, too!
13 Tips For Better Sleep
With a growing body of science around the importance of sleep, here are 13 tips to maximize your sleep hygiene.
A few things that work for my husband and I:
- We read before bed to wind down.
- We put our phones on silence after 10 p.m. {except phone calls}.
- We don’t have a TV in the bedroom…{We found it too distracting when one person is hooked on a show and one wants to go to sleep!}
- We *attempt* to keep our room picked up so it feels more like a retreat at the end of the day, and less like our living room.
- We keep medicine organized in the cabinet for those middle-of-the-night allergy attacks and kid coughs/fevers/aches.
- We shoot to work out at least three times each week so we’re truly tired at night.
Health and wellness expert Stephanie Popso also offers these tips for better sleep hygiene:
- Stick to a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
- Try to limit night-time stimulants like electronics an hour before bed.
- Keep your bed linens clean by washing them in hot water weekly.
- Use a zippered allergen-barrier mattress protector like AllerEase Maximum to prevent dust mites, pollen and pet dander from collecting in your mattress.
- Shower at night versus the morning to rinse hair and skin of pollutants before getting into bed.
- Invest in an air purifier or plants like ivy or palm that can help rid your indoor air of impurities.
- Limit pet time in the bedroom, and if that’s nonnegotiable, using allergen barrier bedding can limit allergens from entering the mattress.
One area that I hadn’t considered being an allergy attack waiting to happen is my bed. For Michiganders especially, nature creates an abundance of allergens like cottonwood and ragweed, which makes it nearly impossible to avoid peak allergy seasons.
I recently updated our bedroom to include an AllerEase mattress cover, comforter, pillow and pillow protectors, and am excited to see if it helps cut down my middle-of-the-night attacks.
I’m ecstatic that these products block allergens such as dust mites, pollen, bedbugs, pet dander, and other household irritants that can disrupt sleep.
Because sometimes this little guy sneaks on our bed for his daytime naps…Good thing he’s cute!

I probably need one of these … I have terrible allergies this year.
Also the only time I ever have had a TV in my room was when I was 5 years old, ha! We were in an apartment (just moved to Illinois) and they had nowhere else to put it. Even in my condo now I’m fine with just a TV in the living room. 🙂

Glad I’m not the only one with terrible allergies! I’ve become crazy about my bedding and washing my towels more frequently and it does seem to help.
I always had a TV in my room growing up too! Now, I much rather read. TV sucks me in then I don’t want to sleep!
