One of the best parts of being a blogger is learning about things I never knew existed and heading out to visit them. One such place I recently read about on the Pure Michigan website and had to go check out for myself is the Oaken Transformations Sculpture and Poetry Park in Brighton.
NATURE? – check. POETRY? – check. ART? – check. FREE? – check. This is one heck of a cool gem if you ask me!
My little guy and I recently went poking around to see if it was worth a visit, and it absolutely was. In fact, so much so that my guy was immediately asking if we could go again soon. We certainly will be visiting often since it’s practically next door to the gym I frequent and there is so much to take in!
This hidden gem is on the property of Dr. Bonine, an oral surgeon based in Brighton. Simply park in the doctor’s lot and scan the perimeter for sculptures! I recommend walking down the paved driveway a bit and starting your walk on the right hand side along the path.
{The start is pretty much across from this giant oak tree}
Along the path you will find amazing work by talented poets and artists with ties to the state of Michigan. There is even an interactive component with QR scan codes to listen to the poems written. The poems were stunning! While my little guy didn’t quite have the patience to stand and read, I loved all of them I read. I look forward to taking my second grader who is currently learning about poetry!
My favorite poem was about summer in Michigan…It was amazing. But you will have to visit to read that one 🙂
When we went, the only thing that was in bloom were daffodils, so we can’t wait to visit again and see what else nature has in store. The property is a certified wildlife habitat so there are lots of different plants and animals to spot along the way — just make sure to be respectful and stay on the path.
The half mile loop winds through woods and ponds. It is absolutely gorgeous and the perfect amount of walking for little legs.
There even is a horse farm at the back of the property if you want to stop and peek at the beautiful creatures.
Walking around and finding the art was my 4-year-olds favorite thing about this field trip. Our favorite sculpture was Leaf Man. How cool is he?! There are quite a few unique ones to spot along the path.
Planning a Visit
The property is only open during the week from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. The property is gated during the weekends.
Oaken Transformations is located at 6893 Grand River Rd., Brighton, MI 48114 {Look for the green Dr. Bonine sign}. It is super close to Rollerama and Zap Zone if you are looking for something else in the area. We also love the Imagination Station playground in downtown Brighton, too.

I’m on the hunt for more outdoor hidden gems around southeast Michigan. Where are your favorites?
