Our family recently had the fun opportunity to check out Wild Kratts + Rock U at Sloan Museum — and boy did we have fun!
Our adventure took place at the Courtland Center Mall in Burton, which is the current home of Sloan while the museum itself is renovated {Check out the planning here}. The giant space truly is perfect for exhibits in the meantime!
We loved having two adventures in one, and it’s hard to say which one the kids liked more because they definitely enjoyed both!
Wild Kratts Creature Power: The Exhibit
We started with the Wild Kratts side. This adventurous exhibit focuses on cultivating STEM skills in children ages 3 to 9. Families have the opportunity to explore animal habitats from around the globe, discover incredible creature powers, and go on a mission to foil the villains’ nefarious plans.
The four animal habitat areas included in the exhibit were the tropical rainforest, the Antarctic, the Australian outback desert and your neighborhood.
We also had the chance to learn about and try out various Creature Powers® such as:
- Sneaking through the forest using the stealth of a jaguar
- Swinging through the trees like a spider monkey
- Testing their hops against a kangaroo
- Flinging bugs into the mouth of a frog
- Sliding down the ice like a penguin
- …and more!
The kids had a blast exploring. It was so colorful and fun too!
Rock U: The Institute of Rock ‘N’ Roll
After we finished checking out the Wild Kratts area, we went back to the front to tackle Rock U. This area was full of info on North America’s greatest institutions: Rock and roll! We were able to explore the foundations of rock dating back to the 1950’s, focusing on the lives of early greats from The Beatles to Elton John, Guns N’ Roses, and beyond.
The kids and I were able to hear live concerts through listening stations, and even try our hand at playing instruments.
My little guy loved playing the drums and hearing himself inside the headphones. He even got to pretend to be a DJ in a sound booth, which he enjoyed as well.
The girls loved the guitars and keyboards. It was so fun just letting them “jam” and not having to worry that they will break something.
All of the items are intended to be played with, which made it such fantastic exposure to instruments and music!
There even was a wall of how far we’ve come with music — from listening to it on records to iPods. My kids got a kick out of what I used to listen to music as a kid — a discman. They thought it was so huge 😉
Overall, we spent about two hours between both areas and in the back play area playing and exploring. I highly recommend a visit for a little indoor fun in the months ahead!
