September is such a lovely month, right? Cool mornings followed by warm days, the leaves starting to change, apple picking, and perhaps every parent’s favorite reason — back to a routine, even if it looks a little different this year.
I’ve outlined 30 things to do this September below. I tried to do a good mix on places to go for those seeking adventure as well as plenty of at-home fun for those keeping life closer to home.

30 Things To Do in September
September 1 — Create some art like this stack of books from Art Hub for Kids to celebrate back-to-school.
September 2 — Visit the Michigan Science Center in Detroit for FREE thanks to Aramco Americas {through September 6}.
September 3 — Tune in to the Michigan State Fair Facebook page for some fun including a sheep shearing contest, giant pumpkin weigh-in, and more {virtual events will be held throughout the weekend}.
September 4 — Pop some popcorn and check out Mulan on Disney+! Fair warning though — it is $30 — so maybe gather up some friends and chip in together.
September 5, 12, 19, 26 — Enjoy a FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art thanks to Huntington. {Mask up and social distance!}
September 6 — Check out the Drive-in Concert Series in Downtown Royal Oak supporting Arts, Beats and Eats. Each performance is limited to 50 vehicles and will deliver 30-minute high energy sets from two Michigan bands. Tickets are $30 per car.
September 7 — Stop into the Labor Day Sale at all Metro Detroit Salvation Army Thrift Stores and get 50% off all clothing, all day long.
September 8 — Check out Michaels Kids Club online for some cute crafts. On this day, your child can create a dotted fall tree. Perfect art class! RSVP in advance.
September 9 — Visit several local cider mills and decide which one has the tastiest donuts.
September 10 — Check out the SCRAP Box in Ann Arbor for some amazing things to create with.
September 11 — Remember this important day in U.S. history with your children. Lots of great ideas and book suggestions here.
September 12 — Have a park hopping day where you travel to several different local parks and then vote for your favorite.
September 13 — Happy Grandparents Day! Celebrate by having the kids create some art to send to grandparents in the mail. {Perfect opportunity for older kids to learn how to address mail too.}
September 14 — Go on a Virtual Field Trip to a place such as the Great Wall of China, Mars, or a zoo.
September 15 — Check out Michaels Kids Club online for some cute crafts. On this day, your child can create watercolor fall leaves. RSVP in advance.
September 16 — Head apple picking at a local u-pick farm. {Our favorite is Spicers in Fenton.}
September 17 — Visit the animals and nature-filled playscape at Howell Nature Center.
September 18 — With temperatures cooling, Fridays are perfect movie nights! Make a movie list of ones to watch together. Get inspired at this post.
September 19 — Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day! Celebrate with a pirate craft or a scavenger hunt.
September 20 — Visit a Little Free Library. Donate some books, and pick up some new ones too.
September 21 — Hike the 1.9 mile Wildwing trail at Kensington Metropark in Milford and feed the birds.
September 22 — Happy Equinox! Celebrate autumn by creating a fall bucket list with your family.
September 23 — Go on a leaf walk and make our family’s favorite craft — leaf and crayon art.
September 24 — Check out a new downtown area you’ve never visited.
September 25 — Get your fall baking on. Some of our favorites are pumpkin muffins, apple crisp and crockpot applesauce.
September 26 — Happy National Pancake Day! Have you see the pancake boards on Pinterest? Have some fun creating one with the kids!
September 27 — Visit Upland Hills Farm in Oxford for their Summer Sundays program. $9/person. To accommodate social distancing, purchase tickets in advance here.
September 28 — Create a stop animation video with your toys! The Stop Motion Studio app is FREE and easy to use.
September 29 — Head to a state park for a hike. We are so lucky to have so many beautiful ones! Get ideas here.
September 30 — Visit Hell, Michigan for some pre-Halloween fun, including putt-putt and ice cream.
