January 1
Set your family goals for the year! Maybe it’s new chores, maybe it’s a reading or hiking goal. {Also, if you need clothing or an excuse to get out, check out Salvation Army thrift stores for 50% off clothes!}

Enjoy a FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art thanks to Huntington. {Masks required}
January 3
Celebrate the season and decorate with paper snowflakes! {These ones from 5-Minute Crafts are amazing.}
January 4
If the weather outside is frightful, create an obstacle course in your house for a little exercise. Or, try a card game for exercise for both you and the kids!
January 5
Take a virtual tour to learn about Indigenous people in Detroit with the Detroit Experience Factory. Takes place at 6:30 p.m. FREE.
January 6
It’s National Cuddle-Up Day…so cuddle up for a movie night. Try one of these classic films based on the ages of your children.
January 7
Dress-up the inside of your front door as a snowman {like this}. Festive and something fun the kids can do!
January 8
Visit the Glenlore Trails for Aurora before it closes on January 10th!
January 9
Visit a local sledding hill or another spot for winter fun. We can’t wait to book a time slot at Hawk Island Snow Tubing in Lansing. {Love that we can do this so we don’t have to wait in line!}

Join Wayne State University for a FREE virtual planetarium show about our solar system. RSVP here.
January 11
Enjoy a family board game night together! We love the Heads Up and Charades apps on our phones.
January 12
Prepare a summery meal and have an indoor picnic. {We do hot dogs this way since they are easy to sit and eat!}

Complete a jigsaw puzzle as a family.

Take an extravagant “fun” bath. My kids love face masks, bath bombs, glow toys and glow sticks. It’s the perfect thing to do on a long winter day!
January 15
Visit Robert C. Valade Park in Detroit throughout the weekend to enjoy hands-on activities and winter games, as well as marshmallow roasting, giant outdoor fireplaces, a DJ, outside food and drink and sledding (when it snows).

January 16
No babysitter? No problem! Plan a special date night IN with one of these ideas!
January 17
Book a time to visit the animals and explore the grounds of the Howell Nature Center{must register in advance}.
January 18
Happy MLK Day! Find a volunteer opportunity, try these inexpensive random acts of kindness, or hit up the library! There are so many amazing books highlighting Dr. King’s work and it’s important history for all children to understand.
January 19
Build the ultimate blanket fort and read inside. {In fact, bed sheets can be used for all sorts of imaginative play!}
January 20
Happy National Penguin Day! Check Pinterest for craft ideas, or visit the zoo to see the real deal!
January 21
Sneak in a visit the Marvel exhibit at The Henry Ford {purchase tickets in advance}. The exhibit closes on January 31.

Visit Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea and take a lantern lit hike with the family or as a couple. {Find a bunch of night hikes here}

Create some fun winter art with Art For Kids Hub.
January 24
Create bird feeders with an empty toilet paper roll, peanut butter, and bird seed.
January 25

Today is statehood day for Michigan! On this day in 1837, Michigan became the 26th state in the United States. Research history and facts, and make sure to bake a birthday cake to celebrate too!
