Alert the masses…There is a new apple in town and it is definitely picking up steam in local grocers and apple orchards here in Michigan. It’s the EverCrisp® — a Honeycrisp and Fuji cross with a sweet flavor and a crisp, juicy crunch. And my goodness is it tasty!
This variety was developed to thrive in Midwest climates, and withstand the unpredictable winter and spring weather patterns. It arrives later in the season {it’s usually harvested in early November} and has a long shelf life, maintaining sweetness and firmness for months.
We recently tried it, and decided to compare it to some of our other favorite Michigan apple varieties.
Michigan Apple Taste Test
We love doing taste tests around here and have done them with everything from gummy candies to Faygo and Oreo flavors. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to cover something that is not only delicious but healthy too!
Taste tests are a fun way to get your child to try something new, or just learn what your family’s favorite is. For us, testing Michigan Apple varieties was a fun way to break up an afternoon of outdoor play…Because if your kids are like mine, they are always hungry and ready for a snack when playing outside!
While the kids played, I set-up a blind taste test to see what the kids and a few of their friends thought of four different Michigan Apple varieties. I purchased Gala, Golden Delicious, and regular Honeycrisp to compare alongside the EverCrisp® and labeled them 1 through 4. Each kiddo ate a slice of each and then we voted on our favorites.
Our crew was split down the middle for our favorite — half of the group chose the EverCrisp® and half chose Golden Delicious. I was super surprised by the results since Honeycrisp is almost always the fan favorite here, and rightfully so 😉
One of the gals, who claimed she was a diehard Honeycrisp lover, kept asking what the EverCrisp® apple was called because she wanted to tell her mom to buy it – ha! As far as apples go, I’d say it’s in the candy category — it has a great mix of sweetness and crunch.
Overall, the kids had a blast testing the apples and are ready for another blind taste test. I highly suggest giving the Evercrisp a try if you see it in stores or at your favorite local orchard!
