It’s so hard to believe it’s already MAY. Where did the past few months go?
My kids actually get out of school at the end of this month so we are scrambling to get last-minute school stuff done so we can enjoy some fun in the sun this summer!
In the meantime, I’ve collected 31 things to do with kids in May 2021 across southeast Michigan and beyond. Have fun planning some adventures!

May 1
Head to Detroit and visit the fun and playful Los Trompos art installation in Beacon Park! The colorful spinning tops will be in the park through May 23, 2021.
May 2
It’s the return of farmers market season in many cities, so buy local and fresh! Such a great opportunity for kids to ask farmers questions, too….or maybe barter with their cute faces 😉
May 3 {P.S. It’s Teacher Appreciation Week!}
Have the kids draft a nice letter of appreciation or draw a special picture for their teachers.

May the 4th…be with you! Celebrate Star Wars Day by making these neat LEGO mosaics or using these fun patterns for Perler beads.
May 5
Happy Cinco de Mayo! There are tons of great kid’s recipe and craft ideas to celebrate this holiday on Pinterest. Or use it as a great excuse to support your favorite local Mexican restaurant {not that most of us need an excuse}!
May 6
Paint flower pots for Mother’s Day. Small clay pots are inexpensive to purchase or make a cute canvas for a heartfelt project.
May 7
Check out what’s in bloom at Cranbrook House & Gardens in Bloomfield Hills.
May 8
Visit Brightside Blooms in Howell for their Spring Fling event featuring local makers.

Happy Mother’s Day! Take the day OFF, mamas. Or, at least refuse to do laundry or cooking 😉

Take time to visit a local shop. We love Spun Sugar Shoppe in South Lyon!
May 11
The air *should* be starting to warm up. Now is a great time to nab an at-home science kit to grow caterpillars!
May 12
Play the card game Garbage. So fun and great for helping kids that are learning to count.

Create a fairy or gnome area using supplies found around the house, or items from Dollar Tree.

Go mural hunting and take some photos in your town! {This mural just outside downtown Howell is one of our favorites…we call her the Blue Lady!} There are some new ones in Flint, too.

Take a bike ride. Is there somewhere near by you could ride to? Go on a two-wheeled adventure.

Visit an ice cream place that is new to your family. {We have an ice cream bucket from NautiMI on the River in Pinckney on our radar.}
May 17
Head to a state park for a hike. We are so lucky to have so many beautiful ones! Get ideas here. {We love using the iNaturalist app to identify plants and animals}

Many homes have some grass seed and a little soil laying around. Make a grass head guy with a few at-home supplies.
May 19
With Memorial Day and 4th of July just around the corner, try your hand at some red, white, and blue tie-dye. It’s easy and fun to do. My favorite brand of kits can be found here. {affiliate link}

Go garage sailing! Tis the season. Going on Thursdays tend to be the best days when possible. Time to start keeping an eye out. {My kids love going!}

Today is National Endangered Species Day. Sounds like a great day to discuss the importance of wildlife conservation with the kids. Check out the most recent list of threatened species and see if there are steps your family can do to help.

Plant flowers as a family, even if it’s just filling a few pots for your porch. Such a great skill for kids to know, and great sensory play for little ones.

Check out what family movies are new if you use a streaming service, or check out a movie from your local library. Then, enjoy a family movie night at home…But make it like a movie theater experience and buy extra special treats.

Have an indoor picnic for dinner. It’s a fun and easy way to change things up, or try the backyard or a local park if it’s beautiful out.

Challenge the kids to get creative and make a homemade boat and see how long it will float. Get inspiration here.

Head to a Lansing Lugnuts game {or another minor league game with inexpensive tickets!}. Kids get to run the bases on Sunday and it’s SO fun!
