From an inspiring book to an inspiring podcast, there’s lots to love in this edition of Favorite Things August 2021!
Cue the music: These are a few of my favorite things…
BOOK: THE SUN DOES SHINE: HOW I FOUND LIFE AND FREEDOM ON DEATH ROW
It’s easy to fall in love with Anthony Ray Hinton in this nonfiction book about his 30 years on Alabama’s death row for two murders he did not commit. Mr. Hinton’s optimism and hope throughout, as well as his love for his mother and best friend, is awe-inspiring. This is the type of book that really makes you contemplate the injustices of the world.
Hinton highlights what it means to be black, southern, and poor, and be under the scrutiny of the law. It’s an excellent read for anyone interested in social justice and understanding how systematic racism and how being poor can determine how a person is treated. It definitely will bring out your inner bulldog as you root for Hinton throughout.
FOOD: MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN BURGERS
It certainly has felt too hot to cook lately, right? I’ve been on the hunt for ready made meals when possible that also aren’t ladened with fat and calories.
These premade burgers are super tasty and great on a bun with some tzatziki sauce, broken up in a pita, or in a Greek-inspired salad. Plus, the kids will eat them, and they don’t like many things with flavor 😉 {P.S. If you’re not already shopping at Aldi, you truly are missing out on so many great and unique products!}
ADVENTURING ESSENTIAL: LET’S GO COCONUTS HAND SANITIZER BY SCENT THEORY
As many mamas know, all hand sanitizers are not created equal. Our family has been loving this Scent Theory foaming hand sanitizer. Not only is it effective, but it doesn’t have a harsh scent and it doesn’t dry out hands. I also love that it is Made in the USA and uses essential oils to scent the products.
Additionally, I love that it’s foaming because it’s easy for kids to rub all over and ensure they didn’t miss a spot. It doesn’t dry sticky either!
It’s currently only available at Walmart for $2.97. It’s great for backpacks or to keep in the car during this pandemic and cold season.
SMALL BUSINESS: POKÉ FRESH
One business my husband and I love to frequent for lunch is Poké Fresh. If you dig sushi, there’s a high chance you will also love poké bowls, which gained fame in Hawaii. The ingredients are always super fresh and the flavors are always consistent and perfect. I’m a big fan of the Whole Lotta Love bowl with a mix of brown rice and spring mix to make it a little healthier. If you haven’t been, absolutely give them a shot!
There are locations in Brighton, East Lansing and Howell, and it’s easy to order online and pick-up in a no touch area. Definitely a delicious small business to support!
PODCAST: WE ARE SUPPORTED BY…
Kristen Bell and Monica Padman are amazing hosts on this show, which features many famous women who have put a crack in the glass ceiling. The 10-episode mini series features powerhouses such as Oprah Winfrey, Malala Yousafzai, Reese Witherspoon, Abby Wambach and more. I love the conversations these women have!
Additionally, the theme song for this podcast features Sarah Bareilles and the Detroit Youth Choir!
