It’s so hard to believe it’s already MAY. Where did the past few months go?
My kids actually get out of school June 2nd, so we are scrambling to get last-minute stuff done so we can enjoy some fun in the sun this summer! In the meantime, I’ve collected 31 things to do in Southeast Michigan in May 2022.
Make sure to be on the lookout for tulips, and have fun planning some adventures!

May 1
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Have the kids draft a nice letter of appreciation or draw a special picture for their teachers. {And if you’d like to purchase a gift, gift cards were the number one request from teachers I have polled. Think spots for summer fun!}
May 2
It’s Harry Potter Day! For all the Potterheads of the world, this could be a great day to make a fun Potter-inspired meal.
May 3
It’s the final weeks for Sloan Museum at Courtland Center Mall in Burton, and the final week to see the Hot Wheels exhibit, which closes on May 15. {The revamped Sloan Museum in Flint will open in mid-July and we can’t wait!}

May the 4th…be with you! Celebrate Star Wars Day by making these neat LEGO mosaics or using these fun patterns for Perler beads.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! There are tons of great kid’s recipe and craft ideas to celebrate this holiday on Pinterest. Or use it as a great excuse to support your favorite local Mexican restaurant {not that most of us need an excuse}!

Paint flower pots for Mother’s Day. Small clay pots are inexpensive to purchase or make a cute canvas for a heartfelt project.

Are your kids fans of YouTube sensation MrBeast? If so, you have to try his “super secret location” BeastBurger! Learn how to find a location nearest you at this post.

Happy Mother’s Day! Take the day OFF, mamas. Or, at least refuse to do laundry or cooking 😉
Additionally, it’s the return of farmers market season in many cities, so buy local and fresh! Such a great opportunity for kids to ask farmers questions.

Create a fairy or gnome area using supplies found around the house, or items from Dollar Tree.
Or, head to MSU’s Bug House for a FREE open house where you can see, touch or even hold some real creepy crawlers.
May 10
Head out geocaching in your town as a family. Make sure pack a pen and some small goodies you could leave behind.
May 11
Visit an ice cream place that is new to your family. Or get adventurous and head to Hell, Michigan to get ice cream toppings out of a coffin at Screams Ice Cream.
May 12
Head out for U-Pick asparagus! This is offered at Erwin Orchards in South Lyon, Slow Farm in Ann Arbor and Long Family Farm in Commerce.
May 13
It’s Friday, the 13th! Have some spooky fun at a special event at the Terrified Forest in Pinckney to celebrate being halfway to Halloween.
May 14
Today is the 30th annual National Stamp Out Hunger Day! Leave any non-perishables you’d like to donate to local food banks in or near your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up. This is great, easy way to teach children about the importance of giving back.
May 15
Today is Flower Day at Eastern Market in Detroit. Visit for fantastic deals and beautiful plants.
Additionally, this is the kick-off day for Bookstock, Michigan’s largest book sale at Laurel Park Place Mall in Livonia. {If you are a book lover, this sale is a must!}

The air *should* be starting to warm up. Now is a great time to nab an at-home science kit to grow caterpillars.
May 17
Head to a state park for a hike. We are so lucky to have so many beautiful ones! Get ideas here. {We love using the iNaturalist app to identify plants and animals}

Many homes have some grass seed and a little soil laying around. Make a grass head guy with a few at-home supplies.
May 19
With Memorial Day and 4th of July just around the corner, try your hand at some red, white, and blue tie-dye. It’s easy and fun to do. My favorite brand of kits can be found here. {affiliate link}

Go garage sailing! Tis the season to start keeping an eye out. {My kids love going!} Download the Little Free Library app and find some fun books along the way.

Today is National Endangered Species Day. Sounds like a great day to discuss the importance of wildlife conservation with the kids. Check out the most recent list of threatened species and see if there are steps your family can do to help.
May 22
Plant flowers as a family, even if it’s just filling a few pots for your porch. Such a great skill for kids to know, and great sensory play for little ones.
May 23
Check out what family movies are new if you use a streaming service, or check out a movie from your local library. Then, enjoy a family movie night at home…But make it like a movie theater experience and buy extra special treats.

Have an indoor picnic for dinner. It’s a fun and easy way to change things up, or try the backyard or a local park if it’s beautiful out.

Plan a scavenger hunt around your city! Here is a post with ideas on how to make it happen.
The artist designed mini golf course at Cranbrook Art Museum also opens on this day. It sounds like an amazing way to appreciate art while getting some outdoor movement. Count me in!
