February 1
Kick off the month in a positive way by creating these fun and encouraging heart notes for each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. My kids LOVE this tradition, and I plan to do it every year they live at home.
February 2
Happy Groundhog Day! Will the little critter see a shadow? Make your prediction, and then watch Michigan’s own groundhog, Woody, make her prediction live with the Howell Nature Center. Learn more here. Kick off starts at 7:30 a.m. FREE to attend.
Additionally, visit the Howell Historic Theatre for a FREE community screening of the 2018 documentary film “I am MLK, Jr.” followed by a panel discussion. Recommended for ages 13+.
February 3
The Plymouth Ice Festival runs through this weekend. This is one of the area’s most premier winter events and it’s FREE to visit. Learn more about all the events here.
Date Night: Alanis Morissette’s musical Jagged Little Pill runs through this weekend at The Wharton in East Lansing as well. Due to sensitive content, this show is recommended for adults. Perfect for a date night or girls night. This show will make you laugh, cry, and leave thinking more about it.
February 4
Start the morning off making a Valentine vase at a FREE Home Depot Kids’ Workshop. Learn more here.
Then, visit the Trinity Health Plaza for a FREE luminary walk and event or head to Island State Rec in Brighton for a lantern hike in the evening. Both are FREE. Find details on statewide night hikes here. {These will be so beautiful with all the current snow!}
February 5
Head to Michaels Stores for a FREE MakeBreak workshop to make painted friendship rocks from 2-4 p.m. All supplies are included. Learn more here.
Additionally, don’t forget that the Michigan History Center in Lansing is FREE every Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
February 6

February 7
Head to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum located on Belle Isle. This museum is FREE to visit with a Michigan Rec Passport or with a Michigan Activity Pass. Learn what to expect here.
February 8
Get crafty and make some Valentine’s to send to others — grandparents, local police/EMS/firefighters, or local nursing homes.
February 9
Plan a date or family day at an Escape Room. We love Escape Room Novi‘s Candy Factory for a good challenge! {Recommended for ages 8+ with adult help.}
And if you want the excuse NOT to cook, it’s National Pizza Day 😉 Try your hand at homemade pie or get carryout and support a local pizza joint.
February 10
There is no better place in Michigan to celebrate Black History Month than The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. Check out their programming for the month to attend a special event, or just wander the museum on your own time.
February 11
Lots happening on this day and I couldn’t just pick one event, so here are a few ideas:
Visit Potter Park Zoo in Lansing for their Ice Safari from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to see animal ice carvings displayed throughout the zoo. Learn more here. {Happening this weekend and next!}
Catch the FREE Darwin Discovery Day at MSU Museum in East Lansing from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to explore the effects of climate change on plants, animals, and ecosystems.
Go to the University of Michigan’s Natural History Museum in Ann Arbor for Dinosaur Discovery Day for a fun-filled extravaganza of dinosaur-themed activities, crafts, and lab experiments. FREE. After, head over to County Farm Park for their annual Ice Carving Festival, which is also FREE to attend.
Head to Hartland for their FREE annual Winterfest event featuring sledding, entertainment, food, ice skating and a fireworks show at dusk.
February 12
Head to The Henry Ford Museum for the launch of their new interactive exhibit, SCOOBY-DOO! Mansion Mayhem, at the museum through April 9. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
Additionally, this day brings the Super Bowl! Celebrate with all the delicious foods and stay tuned for a fun game I will be sharing for the whole family.
February 13
Visit For-Mar Nature Preserve in Burton to try snowshoeing for FREE! Check their calendar for some great special events, too.
Or, head to Michigan State University for their Bug House open house from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures! FREE.
February 14
Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a great day for pancakes with sprinkles, love notes and alllll the heart shaped foods. Also, check out these ideas for a date night in or a date night out!
February 15
Visit The Scrap Box in Ann Arbor or Arts and Scraps in Detroit and create a fun craft out of recycled goods.
February 16
Take the kids cross-country skiing. There are lots of places that do rentals! {Read about our experience at Huron Meadows here.}
February 17
Is there fresh snow on the ground? If so, try making this super simple maple syrup snow candy!
February 18
It’s FREE Fishing Weekend in the state of Michigan. Grab an ice fishing pole and have some fun on the ice. All fishing license fees will be waived. Additionally, a Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend.
Additionally, Grammy Award winning band, The Okee Dokee Brothers, will be performing at The Wharton Center in East Lansing. Looks like a great excuse to introduce the kids to live music. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

Visit Michaels Stores for a FREE MakeBreak to make art celebrating Black Heritage for Black History Month. Learn more here.
February 20
Today is President’s Day! Take the time to learn all about our U.S. presidents. Visit the library for inspiration, or check Pinterest for cool crafts to celebrate.
February 21
It’s Fat Tuesday…aka Paczki Day. Hit up a local bakery to indulge. Buy a few flavors and chop them up to see which your family likes best.
February 22
If there is fresh snow, make some snow ice cream. It’s actually pretty tasty! We love this recipe.
February 23
Head to the Flint Children’s Museum for some play-inspired fun. This is one of our favorites for the 5 and under crowd! It’s so cute. Also, their brand new exhibit — Australian Safari — will be open by this date!
February 24
Go glow-in-the-dark mini-golfing at the Putting Edge in Novi — just make sure to reserve a time in advance and check Groupon beforehand!
February 25
Go ice skating at Riley Park Ice Rink in Farmington or at another local rink.
February 26
Head to The Wharton Center in East Lansing for the educational and family-friendly show, Secret of the Whales, presented by National Geographic. Learn more and grab tickets here.
February 27
Today is National Pokémon Day. Why not spend it playing Pokémon Go, a fun and interactive game that inspires adventure? Head out to explore with the kids, hunting creatures along the way. {My kids LOVE The Upkeep Games store in Howell for getting trading cards!}
February 28
Escape the cold and plan a visit to an arcade. We love Dave & Busters {Livonia and Utica}, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum {Farmington Hills} and The Arcade in Brighton.
