Spring is almost here…Who else is excited?! March is always a fun month to do a round-up about because it’s reading month, women’s history month, St. Patrick’s Day, and more. There is lots to celebrate!
With maple syrup fun, the start of spring, and loads of “made up” holidays that are the perfect for doing something a little special, it’s great month to sit down as a family and make some plans 😉

Happy Read Across America Day!
- Check out your local library for virtual events and make it a priority to read daily this month. Love this list of creative reading ideas for the month.
March 3
- Have a little one? Head to Detroit to check out Paw Patrol Live! Heroes Unite at The Fox Theatre in Detroit. Tickets start at $40 and the show runs all weekend.
- Drop off the kids {well, ages 8+!} to The Ceramic Studio, Etc. in Howell for a kids’ night out project! This month’s project is a fused glass leprechaun house. $38 to participate.
March 4
- It’s Maple Syrup month and there are LOTS of local events. Check out upcoming events here and make sure to register in advance to save a spot.
- It’s the first Saturday of the month, so that means a FREE Kids’ Workshop at Home Depot. This month’s project is a mini pinball machine. Learn more and register here.
- Check out Island Lake for a lantern hike from 7-9 p.m. {FREE, but a Michigan State Rec passport is required, or you can rent one through your library with the MAP Pass}
- Head to For-Mar in Burton for an Adventures in Reading literacy event from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. FREE.
- Got a babysitter? Check out this list for places to play as a couple on a date night in SE Michigan.
March 5
- Head to Emagine Theaters to see one of their $3 kids’ movies. This week features The LEGO Movie.
- Visit the Michigan History Center in Lansing. It’s FREE every Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Check out Michaels Stores for a MakeBreak celebrating “Sheroes.” This event is FREE. Check your local store for timing.
- Go to the Detroit Institute of Arts for the Japanese Girls Celebration, featuring a tea ceremony, hina doll display, ikebana flower arrangements and more, along with storytelling and origami workshops. Events are included with admission.
- The Detroit Outdoor Adventure Center will also be FREE to visit on this day, from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. Learn more here.

Today is National Oreo Cookie Day!
- A few years back, we bought all the flavors we could find {Walmart had the best selection – FYI} for a taste test with the neighbor kids. It was so fun!
March 7
Today is National Cereal Day. Sounds like a great excuse to go easy on yourself for dinner 😉
- If you have access to a pond, take on a nature project and raise some tadpoles. {You can check out my Instagram reel here of ours from a few years ago.}

Today is International Women’s Day!
- Deliver flowers to the women you love the most or try one of these ideas to celebrate being a woman from reading books to listening to Girl Power music.

Today is National Barbie Day!
- If you have a kiddo that is into Barbie, it sounds like a fun excuse for some hot pink-inspired fun 😉
- Plan an outdoor scavenger hunt in your town with friends.

This day is Mario Day…MAR10 — get it?!
- Play some Mario Kart as a family. Or go low-tech and learn to draw Mario!
- Check out the award-winning Brighton Musical presents Guys and Dolls, with seven performances March 10-19 at Brighton Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $17 for students; $22 for adults and seniors. {This production is best suited for middle school and up.} More info here.
- For older kids, the movie Chang Can Dunk premieres on Disney+ and looks like a great one for a family movie night.
March 11
- Visit Epiphany Studios in Pontiac to make a DIY glass bird on this day. Or check out an upcoming event. {It’s a bit pricey, but this is totally on my bucket list to do!}
- Salvation Army thrift stores in metro Detroit will also be having their 50% off clothing sale on this day. Great time to stock up for spring break!
- Head to 2|42 in Brighton for a Family Fun Day for littles starting at 10:15 a.m. Enjoy an interactive music concert with Beverly Meyer – The Music Lady at 10:30 a.m. Families will also receive a free activity bag that includes new books, a puzzle, and an early literacy craft which encourages language and pre-reading skill development. FREE.
- Hit up Monster Jam at Ford Field in Detroit on this day and Sunday. Tickets start at $20. Learn more and get tickets here.

- Head to the Disney Animation Immersive Experience in downtown Detroit. Learn more and get tickets here.
- Check out the interactive Scooby Doo exhibit at The Henry Ford Museum. {Included with museum admission}

Happy 313 Day, Detroit!
- Celebrate 313 Day by thinking about all the reasons to love Detroit. It’s also the perfect excuse for Detroit-style coney dogs, Faygo, and Better Made chips for dinner too.
- Head to Michigan State University for their Bug House open house from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures. FREE.

Happy Pi Day!
- Celebrate Pi with these STEM activities or bake a pie.
- Beetlejuice opens on this evening at The Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing and runs through March 19. Learn more and grab tickets here. {Recommend for ages 10+}
March 15
- Take a spring walk and climb the giant boulders at the Carpenter Lake Nature Trail in Southfield. FREE and tons of fun for kids! If that trail isn’t in your area, visit one of these hiking trails to look for early signs of spring.
March 16
- Plan a road trip over to Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids to see butterflies.
- Grab combo tickets for both Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium for an entire day of fun on the beautiful Flint Cultural Campus. {We love this spot for easy parking and adorable family fun!}
March 17
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
- Teach the kids a bit about why we celebrate St. Patty’s with this article from National Geographic Kids.
- Have a family movie night to watch writer Katie DiCamillo’s book, The Magician’s Elephant, come to life on Netflix. {Check out the trailer here}
March 18
- Head to a local community theatre to see a show. Community Theatre of Howell will be showing Tuck Everlasting on this weekend. Tickets are available here for $15 each.
- Visit the Flint Institute of Arts — it’s FREE every Saturday.
- Register for and attend a kids’ workshop at Lowe’s to make a FREE Cardinal Garden Ornament. {Register is advance here}
March 19
- This is a great time of year to see animals since it’s not too hot, not too cold. Check out the Creature Conservancy or The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms in Ann Arbor.
March 20
Happy first day of SPRING!
- Get inspired with this bucket list of 50+ ideas for spring or check out a new spot for a staycation in nature.
March 21
This day is World Down Syndrome Day!
- Rock mismatched socks to pay homage to all the beautiful people who have three sets of the 21st chromosome! {This list of books that teach children about disabilities and differences is fantastic}
- Today is FREE Cone Day at Dairy Queen. Stop in and grab a cone to celebrate spring, and make a donation to Children’s Miracle Hospitals.
March 22
- Time for some spring cleaning! Encourage the kids to donate toys they never play with, and gather books to bring to local Little Free Libraries.
- If the weather isn’t cooperative for heading outside, play inside at 2|42 in either Brighton or Ann Arbor, which are both FREE to visit.
March 23
- Mild temps are perfect for biking on a local trail. We love Settler’s Park in Hartland. FREE to visit.
March 24
- Have a toddler? Check out toddler time at Launch Trampoline Park! Every Friday from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. {Locations in Ann Arbor, Lansing and Novi} Also, check out this list of toddler-specific fun.
March 25
- Visit the beautiful Stepping Stones Falls in Flint and walk the woodsy 1.25 mile paved path.
- If you have a teen, visit Launch Trampoline Park in Novi for an Ignite, a glow party with a DJ from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
March 26
- Learn about the history of the Detroit River and more at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. FREE to visit with a Michigan Recreation Passport.
- Our spring break will be kicking off. Stay tuned for a list of ideas specific to this timeframe!
March 27
- It’s baby animal season. We love visiting Tractor Supply Co. and seeing the baby chicks. It’s also our favorite spot to pick-up rain boots!
- The Kensington Farm Center is another favorite for baby animals. If you visit around 3 p.m., you will see the animals get fed, too.
March 28
- Snakes, frogs & salamanders, oh my! Visit the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History from 1-4 p.m. for a special themed Scientist Spotlight on amphibians and reptiles. Participate in hands-on activities and learn how museum collections are used in research. FREE. Suitable for upper elementary through adults.
- If your kiddo is a fan of Dav Pilkey, his latest book, Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea, releases on this day. {affiliate link}
March 29
- Look for signs of spring at the ultra beautiful Ledges of Grand Ledge {just outside of Lansing}.
March 30
- With snow *hopefully* melted, this is a great time to collect trash in your city. Challenge the kids to see who can pick up the most.
March 31
- Sign up for a spring 5K to do as a family.
- In the evening, snuggle in for a family movie night with older kids to watch Prom Pact on Disney+.
