This past Monday I was able to have my first baby-free excursion. It’s never easy leaving a nursing baby at home, but sometimes mama needs to do her thing, ya know? And she took a bottle from grandma beautifully – thank the lord! {I love love love my Medela pump. Best money we ever spent!}
I had a DARN good excuse to get out and put on make-up and a dress, too. I was able to attend a luncheon with none other than Ricki Lake! Yes, that Ricki Lake. Like from Hairspray, 90’s talk show TV, and the amazing home birth-inspired documentary The Business of Being Born.
The wonderful gal I work for — Emily Hay — suggested me as a guest and I couldn’t be more grateful. It was so much fun.
The blogging/tweet crew at the luncheon! L to R: Me, Emily Hay, Betsy of Walk the Dog Midwest {and team Hay There}, Erin of Mommy on the Spot and Elena of Mommy Is In Timeout. FAB women!
This was especially a big deal for me because as long as I can remember, I’ve idolized talk show hosts. When I was younger, it was Oprah, Sally and Ricki. In fact, I was nominated as “Most likely to be the next Oprah” my senior year of high school. I didn’t watch typically teen shows growing up. I watched talk shows and 20/20. Why? Because I am fascinated with REAL people and REAL, relatable human interest stories. That is the reason I chose public relations as my career path.
I am so excited that Ricki is coming back to daytime TV. Ever since Oprah left, there has been a void. Sure, The Chew is OK. And so is Anderson Cooper. BUT, Ricki is definitely for me. Her charisma and easy-going nature attracts me. Coupled with the fact that she has made enormous strides for young women and moms, I will be hooked I’m sure and I just know I will love every single one of her topics.
Chatting a bit with her and hearing her story was amazing {did you know she did her first Ricki show pilot when she was only 23?!}. She is just as wonderful in person as she comes across on TV.
How adorbs is she?!
Can’t wait for Sept. 10th when her show debuts. For my local Detroit-area friends, it will air on WDIV Local 4 at 3 p.m. I know I’ll be setting my DVR to record it daily. WOOT!

Have you ever met a celeb in person? What was your experience?
What a treat for you!! So glad you were able to meet one of your favorites. Let’s see, have I ever met a celebrity? Since our world revolves around racing, I met Richard Petty and his son, Kyle. And I met the country music group, Sawyer Brown, YEARS ago. That’s about it.
Great pictures of all of you!
That’s awesome! I’ve met lots of local celebs, but never anyone that big. So cool about Richard Petty!
I was hoping that the day turned out to be wonderful when I saw your tweet about going! And look at you!! You look incredible!
You are so sweet, Jackie. These kids are keeping me active, which is such a blessing. Can’t wait to get the OK from the doc to exercise. I want to get into shape. All your Cinchpiration stuff is an inspiration!
That is so awesome!! I remember watching her show back in the ’90s and thought she was adorable then. And she still is!
How exciting for you. You are both super adorable:) (especially just having a baby)
At a local restaurant, I had the pleasure of serving Molly Ringwald, and not knowing it was her told her “You look like that girl from The Breakfast Club” to which she laughed and said, “I get that a lot”. She is a very sweet gal and we ended up chatting quite a bit.
I have also met Sarah McLachlan, Mr. Rogers, many of the Red Wings from the late 90’s (Osgood, Federov, Vernon), Anna Kournikova, the kids from Hanson, Alan Trammell, Danny Bonaduce, Isiah Thomas and I’m sure a few others that I didn’t recognize.
That is AWESOME! How did you get to meet all these folks?!
I’m pretty sure the one I’d want to meet from your list is Mr. Rogers of course 😉
Well, I met everyone while working at a local trendy restaurant in Troy. I’m sure I met or waited on on a few more celebs, but just didn’t recognize them. Last time we were there for dinner, hubby pointed out there was a guy from the Pistons sitting across the aisle from us. I had no clue who he was.
You look amazing and exciting kind of date…I am happy that you are able to meet your favorites…Thanks for sharing with us..
I am so excited for her show!
Also, I thought I was the only tween that watched 20/20! Every Friday night, I looked forward to watching Barbra Walters and Hugh Downs!
Love it! It’s such a good show!!!
So great to see you there. Hope to see you again soon 🙂
Your so luck having this kind of date…Im so excited to watch her show..
