Have you heard of FootGolf? Yeah, I hadn’t either until a few weeks ago when my neighbor mentioned it. She’s a soccer player and thought it would be a fun group date for a few of us neighborhood couples.
My immediate thoughts: Sounds hard. Sounds crazy. Sounds like a hoot!
You see, our husbands golf together often. I actually was a beer cart girl during college {best job ever – BTW}, and so I can appreciate the game, however, I am horrible at it and don’t own a set of clubs.
FootGolf is a hybrid of soccer and golf in that you only can kick the ball, but it’s played like golf. There is a separate 21-inch hole to catch the ball, which is completely separate from the golf green. All of the typical golf etiquette is used, but it is much easier than golf.
Oh my, was it fun! This is coming from a gal with little athletic ability. I had a few holes where it took me 10 kicks to get it in the hole, but I still had a blast and loved every minute, and learned a lot as I went.
Why love FootGolf?
- It’s a great group date or a family night out with older kids.
- No equipment is needed, and places usually offer ball rental. If you have indoor soccer shoes, those are perfect to wear, but cleats are not allowed on the course. I wore my running shoes and they worked just fine, though you may have a sore toe the following day.
- You get to spend time in nature. {What’s more beautiful than Pure Michigan?!}
- The game goes relatively quickly {faster than golf, which to me, gets boring unless you are playing scramble style. It took us about 1.5 hours to play 9 holes}.
- If you can find the right course, it’s BYOB. Bonus! If it’s not BYOB, make sure to tip the beer cart girl accordingly 😉
- It’s great exercise if you walk the course. My legs were a tad bit sore the next day, so I clearly used some muscles I never knew I had.
- Argyle socks make up the official uniform. Fun, right? {I ordered these from Amazon for our group.}
For our trip, we visited The Falcon in Lansing because it was SO reasonable {$7 to play, $3 to rent a ball}, but there are a few courses around the state. It’s just starting to pick up, so if you want to try it, I recommend requesting it at your local course!
While we played, we spotted deer and watched the sunset. It was gorgeous and a great way to spend some time with friends and end a long week.
