I received free admission to the Michigan Science Center in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed belong to me.
This past week, we packed up and drove to Detroit for a visit to the Michigan Science Center.
As many of you know, my kids are SUPER into science — STEM play, math, space {my daughter even has a space themed room!}, ALL OF IT. So we do our best to incorporate it into our adventures as much as possible.
Thankfully, the Michigan Science Center has plenty to offer for families to learn and engage with science, engineering, motion, space, health and more. We had a blast during our visit, and my kids give the Detroit non-profit a big thumbs up!
Here are 10 reasons we love the Michigan Science Center:
Fun For ALL Ages
With Toyota’s 4D Engineering Theater, live stage shows, a Planetarium, lab activities, 250+ hands-on exhibits, and more, there are dozens of ways to customize your MiSci visit and make it fun for children and adults of ALL ages!
Kids Town
Kids Town is an area designated for the 5 and under crowd. It was set-up like a little town and was so cute. My kiddos enjoyed water play, and playing in the pint-sized diner the most! {Siblings are allowed in if you have a child under 5!}
The Nutrition Exhibit
Coach potato art work is the perfect photo op, but there’s more in this area dedicated to teaching kids about nutrition.
My kids loved playing games, and making a body light up to determine where each body part is located. They can also learn how to decide if food is junk food. Bonus for health-savvy families!
Parking is EASY
Parking is a cinch around the building. If you arrive when it opens, you may get lucky enough to score a spot right in the front lot for NO cost.
Otherwise, street parking is usually pretty decent and affordable. I recommend getting the ParkDetroit app so you can easily add time to your meter should you need to since there is a two hour limit.
Fun for Space-Loving Kids
From an interactive planet exhibit to planetarium shows dedicated to space, there is plenty for kiddos who are intrigued by outer space.
Plenty of STEM fun
The Michigan Science Center is considered the STEM hub of the state, so its focus is on developing and introducing expanded education programs, exhibits, and initiatives that enable us to empower and enrich all children and all communities with STEM.
The STEM Play Challenge area was especially fun for my kids, and we spent a good chunk of our visit building with blocks here.
Fun for Construction-Loving Kids
My little man went nuts for the asphalt mixer he could climb in and the diggers he could interact with.
It was a great way to see how our roads are paved, and have a little fun in the process!
Family Bathrooms
These are SO nice when you have diapers to change or multiple kids while solo parenting! It’s the little things right?
Space To Eat
Normally when you go to any cool tourist destination, you pay out the eyeballs for food. Everything on the menu at the Cosmic Cafe is $6 and under, making it totally affordable for families. You are also welcome to bring in food, it just needs to be eaten in the cafeteria.
Interactive Fun & More
For an additional cost, ticket holders can add on an experience with Toyota’s 4D Engineering Theater or with the Planetarium. Live stage shows and lab activities are included in the ticket price, and a great way to have an educational experience. My kids loved seeing a rocket launch while we were there.
Admission, Hours & Location
Ticket pricing:
General admission is $14/adult, $11/child 12 and under or senior citizen (65+). Children under age two are free.
