If your family loves museums like mine, the Michigan History Museum, located in Lansing, Michigan, is a must!
Not only can kids learn about Michigan’s extensive history, but there is plenty of interactive activities along the way. This is the perfect family field trip, and truly has something for every age to enjoy.
What To Expect At The Michigan History Museum
The Michigan History Museum offers five levels of permanent and changing exhibits that tell the story of Michigan’s past from pre-contact {glaciers forming our state} to Native Americans, through the late 20th century.
Exhibits include interactive computers, audio-visual presentations and hands-on elements, which were labeled with “please touch” signs throughout.
The kids loved trying out what it would feel like to ride in a wagon, and my husband and I enjoyed reminding them what a far cry it is from our “luxury” minivan with a DVD player inside 😉 They said it sure would’ve been a bumpy ride!
A few additional areas my kids really enjoyed included a section on Michigan mining and lumbering {it’s dark inside and feels like a real mine} and a historic classroom, where they got to write with real ink pens. The docents located throughout were so kind and amazing with our kids!
There are quite a few period exhibits, including a movie theatre, doctor’s office, beauty parlor, and even fantastic kitchen straight out of the 1950’s, to name a few.
“Mom, look at this teal and pink kitchen!’ – Their minds were literally blown that this used to be in style. It was such a great lesson for them to see how things have evolved over time.
Personally, I thought it was darling!
We enjoyed the section on WWII, and the kids love spotting Rosie the Riveter, whom they have read about in books.
Our family spent almost three hours going through all the exhibits, and honestly, we could’ve been there longer. There is SO much to do and see. Not only does the museum cover Michigan history, but it really highlights the history of America, too.
When you get back to the first floor, there is a gift shop, which has tons of great Michigan goodies. There also is a cafeteria, a nursing room, and plenty of bathrooms on the premises.
I highly recommend a visit on a dreary day or for a special event. You won’t be disappointed!
