I think one of the hardest parts of COVID-19 is missing out on opportunities for our kids to be physical in a team environment. I don’t know about your kids, but mine are much more likely to engage in a game versus just taking a walk around the block. We miss sports!
I am thrilled some outdoor sports are coming back with protocols in place. A sport two of my kiddos tried last fall and fell in love with, is flag football.
Within the National Flag Football organization, there are more than 100 communities offering flag football. Tons of Michigan cities participate in this program {see bottom of this post for the locations}. In fact, I recently learned Bloomfield Hills is the location for the National Flag Football headquarters, which is pretty cool!
The program is run really well and designed to educate young people about football while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship.
Here are 5 reasons to love the National Flag Football organization:
Low commitment for busy families.
Practices are scheduled an hour before each game resulting in a one day a week commitment to the league. It truly may be a great start for those that are hesitant to enroll in larger sports programs due to COVID-19 because teams are small {8-10 players} and all events are held outdoors.
Boys and girls are welcome.
When my gal decided she wanted to play, I was a bit hesitant, but she decided she didn’t care of she was the only girl on the field. Thankfully, she had great coaches and it was a huge confidence boost for her. She definitely got the stands talking every time she scored a touchdown 😉 and she wasn’t the only girl in the league! Girls are welcome in this organization. Do not hesitate if you have a daughter that wants to play! {Even Girl Scout Troops can sign up if they’re looking for team building!}
In fact, NAIA Colleges are even adding girl’s flag football as a varsity sport in 2021.
Sweet jerseys and a trophy!
Let’s be real, sometimes the best parts of a sport is the swag! This league definitely has some awesome perks for kids. My kids wear their jerseys all the time still a year later {they all mirror NFL teams, which is fun}. They also have brought their trophy’s in for show-and-tell. I say whatever keeps them active and learning how to work as a team is good by me!
Flag offer great exercise and is a non-contact sport.
Flag football games are played in a five-on-five format providing players a fun and exciting exercise opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action while learning lessons of teamwork. All games are officiated by certified and trained officials.
Opportunity to play with friends.
This is a league designed to keep schoolmates and friends playing together. Â Therefore, individuals are placed on teams determined by school, a buddy request, grade and age factors. Makes it more fun for kids when they don’t go in without a friend!
Overall, flag football is such a fun sport to both watch and play. I highly recommend giving it a try if you have a child who has expressed interest in the sport!

NOTE: If you have concerns about play during COVID-19, check out the protocols established for fall plan. As a parent, I feel it’s pretty easy to social distance in the stands with this sport.
