Metro Detroit is lucky to be home to some amazing historic homes that are perfect for exploring. Whether gardens or architecture are your thing or not, there’s something just so magical at getting a peek at how wealthy folks live and choose to spend their money 😉
One enchanting manor that is open to the public is Cranbrook House and Gardens in Bloomfield Hills.
Built in 1908 by famous architect Albert Khan, this breathtaking American Arts and Crafts style home features gardens that are absolutely stunning and they are FREE to visit thanks to sponsors. {Home tours are available for a fee. Closed currently due to Covid.}
I’ve visited a few times, but had never taken the kids. When I said what we were going to do, they all grumbled…”That sounds SO boring, mom!”
After we explored the gardens, they all said they wanted to come back for a house tour. My 8-year-old even said she wanted to come back and explore more on her birthday next year…LOL. It’s such a cool spot!
So glad they are hooked because I am too! It’s so surreal exploring the beautiful property.
There are more than 20 different gardens surrounding Cranbrook House, all of which are designed, planted, and cared for by Cranbrook House & Gardens Auxiliary members.
The Sunken Garden is breathtaking with its more than 4,000 blooms.
The kids loved exploring the nature trails around the Japanese Gardens, including the cute red bridge.
The kids also loved the area around the bog garden, where they found the coolest secret tree {it’s some sort of weeping tree…go through the branches and see a magical wonderland!}. They had fun playing there for a bit.
We spotted turtles, butterflies, dragonflies, and ducks during our visit. Next time, I’d love to bring some frozen peas to feed the ducks.
NOTE: Bathrooms are closed for the 2020 season. We stopped by Meijer on the way there to use the restroom right before our visit 😉 Additionally, all the water features are turned off this season to save money.
Grab your walking shoes and have fun exploring.
If you have time after your visit, I highly suggest checking out the Cranbrook Institute of Science as well!
