Birmingham, Michigan. A prominent suburb of metro Detroit that feels like a different world to this country-raised mama…But don’t let the luxury cars and unique homes fool you — this city is not only beautiful, but is family-friendly, too!
We recently had a family fun day in Birmingham Michigan and had a blast. I decided to partner with DOBI Real Estate on their “What’s To Love” campaign to learn more about things to see and do around Michigan. The campaign is centered around what there is to love about Birmingham – the restaurants, shops, neighborhood, downtown, parks, and the vibe.
One of our favorite things to do when exploring a city is to park hop. Not only is it FREE to do, but it’s a great way to get a feel for the city, play outside, and keep it interesting. Lucky for us, Birmingham boasts 26 parks with more than 230 acres of beauty, so there’s no shortage of spots to explore.
On a recent trip, we visited four different parks within the city of Birmingham. Each had their own perks! {Make sure to check out my Instagram highlighted story for more visuals and video of our favorite features!}
Itinerary: Family Fun Day in Birmingham Michigan
Stop 1: Poppleton Park
We started our trip at a neighborhood park called Poppleton Park, which features a playground, tennis court, and baseball diamonds.
The kids favorite features included a unique climbing area that was great for bigger kids, a mechanical sand digger, and my kids favorite — some gorgeous old trees that were easy to climb.
There are porta potty bathrooms here should you need it and plenty of shady spots to pack and picnic to enjoy.
Stop 2: Booth Park
The next park we visited was Booth Park. This is easily the city’s favorite for kids.
We lived nearby when my oldest was as a toddler, so it was fun to see it through the lens of older kids. This is probably one of the most unique playgrounds in Michigan with its astroturf sliding hill, and a natural play area with boulders. Who knew nature could be so cool?!
A tunnel connecting each side of the playground is a fun detour as well. This truly is a well planned playground, with plenty of surrounding grassy areas for a picnics in the warmer weather and a nice hill for sledding in the winter.
Stop 3: Shain Park + Lunch from Beyond Juice + Exploring Town
Our next stop was grabbing lunch at Beyond Juicery + Eatery, a metro Detroit based fast casual restaurant. I had never been here, but it definitely will not be our last visit! We all adored their smoothies {SO good} and kids meals, and I got to eat what may now be one of my favorite salads ever {it was called The Birmingham if you visit and it happens to be on the menu!}.
While waiting for our food, we headed next door to Adventures in Toys. We needed to pick up a birthday present and love to support independent toy stores when possible. This spot has some unique items for kids — including tons of puzzles and games!
After picking up our food, we visited the city center at Shain Park to eat. This little slice of heaven within the city is a lovely place to stop for photos, to play on their small playground, to listen to a band on a summer evening, or to picnic. The flowers were astounding!
While my youngest two played on the nearby zipline playground, my oldest and I sat by the fountain and people watched. There is definitely no shortage of beauty here.
Stop 4: Barnumn Park
Just outside downtown, sits the beautiful Barnum Park. This playground had some unique features for the kids. The property was formerly a neighbor school, and the original archway still stands. This, coupled with some art sculptures, make it another great place for photos.
I was also thrilled to learn this park has an ice rink in the winter as well. Another fun something to take the kids to do!
At this point in our adventure, the kids were exhausted, so we headed home after driving by the gorgeous Quarton Lake Park, another spot that would be gorgeous to explore {and make sure to find the hidden waterfall!}
Next time we visit, I’d love to check out The Robot Garage. I’d also highly recommend Cranbrook Gardens in nearby Bloomfield Hills if you’re searching for another unique destination for families.
Overall, Birmingham is a gorgeous city worth spending some time in. Get out there and explore!
