REAL BODIES at Sloan Museum of Discovery in Flint, Michigan is the thought-provoking exhibition of human anatomy. It opens today and runs through January 14, 2024. This will be the first time the international exhibit will be in Mid-Michigan.
The exhibit is recommended for ages 12 and up. With that said, if you have a child who loves science and won’t be disturbed by seeing real human anatomy {including private parts} they may enjoy it. My 12 year old thought it was really neat and she was really glad she went.
One of the best visuals I loved as a parent was seeing what healthy lungs compared to a smoker’s lungs looked like. What a great PSA!
In case you aren’t familiar, the exhibition displays real, preserved human bodies in eleven themed galleries and is housed inside the FUN Gallery, Sloan Museum’s 6000 square foot exhibition hall.
REAL BODIES invites visitors to explore the entire human experience, from the first breath to the last. The exhibition pushes boundaries {you definitely will have a few moments of awe and maybe eew as well} while seamlessly blending art, science, and emotion.
The galleries were all really unique and interesting. My daughter and I loved the gallery of Beginnings, showing different stages of fetal development. It’s really incredible how rapid a baby grows — and seeing it really puts the miracle of life into perspective.
NOTE: If this is something that may be triggering due to infant loss, this gallery can easily be skipped. There is signage with a warning.
The exhibit also includes the latest science-based information about COVID-19 in an effort to educate visitors on how SARS-CoV-2 impacts the major systems of human anatomy—from respiration to circulation. This new content was created with physicians and epidemiologists.
