If you’ve been following me awhile, you may know have a slight obsession with repurposing and painting things to make them like new again. I recently tackled a budget-friendly kitchen makeover and wanted to share our results in a real and not completely Pinterested fashion in case you’re interested in doing the same.
The kitchen is the heart of our home, and where we spend 95%+ of the day. Our kitchen was a huge selling point for me — it has ample space and it’s awesome for entertaining. But the past four years, I’ve just felt meh about the space. I wanted to freshen it up, but definitely didn’t have the budget for a big renovation, so I was ecstatic I could finally get my husband on board to have a little fun.
Which reminds me, does anyone else have a husband who fears change? I love changing things up often, especially in our house, so I know I drive my guy crazy. I’ve learned to ask years in advance and let him have time to soak it in 😉
The biggest change we did this round was paint our cupboards. We said goodbye to our oak builder’s grade cabinets….

So much wood…Couldn’t handle it anymore!
…and hello to fresh, bright and airy!
If you recall, I changed my bathroom cabinets and decor a few years ago, and that experience taught me I definitely did not want to tackle painting the kitchen cabinets. Sure, it’s do-able to DIY, but with three young kids, I left it to the pros and hired Megan at The Chipped Edge, based in Linden, Michigan. She was fantastic to work with, and I was relieved to have my kitchen in disarray only for a few days versus the weeks it would’ve taken me.
She painted them in Cottage White from Behr, and I love how they pop now with our black counters and brown backsplash!
Paired with new hardware and new light fixtures, it truly feels like a new space. The pendant light fixture over my sink was SO out of my comfort zone, but for $28, it was worth a shot. I have to say, I love how funky it is! I just swapped out our island light shades for simple $6 ones for a new look and scored the light over our table for $54 at Lowe’s.
I was even able to score letters for just over $3 from Target’s craft department. I just painted them with black acrylic paint. Who knew such small changes could make such a BIG difference?
I’m in love. I’m slowly working on making my house my dream home, and am thrilled to have a start. I plan to re-purpose our table in the warmer months, and potentially add some pops of color to my main level, but one project at a time!
My friend Lyndsey gave me this cool piece of art with a great quote and I happily hung it on our kitchen wall. My 30’s have been an awesome time for self discovery and I’m starting to figure out what I want my house style to be.
A huge part is I’m finally just going with my gut and not asking for opinions along the way. Because let’s be real: As long as mama is happy, everyone is happy. And this fresh kitchen? Makes me happy.
What house projects are you hoping to tackle soon?
Lighting are perfect and the kitchen is so adorable. I so love it. Thank you for the inspiration.
