Yay for May! I love this month for many reasons — the flowers peeking out, the smell of fresh-cut grass, Mother’s Day, and the return of farmer’s markets are just a few. {See this BIG list of local ones!}
Luckily, there is plenty to do with kids this month, too. Check out my list of ideas below and give me a shout if I’ve missed your favorites!
Family Fun in Southeast Michigan May 2019
May 1 — Young Explorers at Michigan Science Center {Detroit} — Visit Kids Town with children ages 2 – 5 at 11 a.m. for stories, science-themed activities and socialization time. Adult with one child is $10; additional children are $5. Children under two are free. May’s theme is rockets.
May 2-5 — Spring Fling Fest {Mason} — Visit Mason to experience a 5K run, a craft show on the courthouse square, pie sale, duck race and much more. FREE.
May 3 — FREE Admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science {Bloomfield Hills} — Visit after 5 p.m. the first Friday of every month, courtesy of the MASCO Corporation, for FREE.

May 4 — Koi Festival at Belle Isle {Detroit} — Visit the koi pond at Belle Isle in correlation with Japan’s Koinobori Festival to celebrate Japanese culture and the significance of the the koi fish. 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. FREE with a Michigan Recreation Pass.
May 4 — Home Depot Kids Workshop {Nationwide} — Come learn how to build a blooming art piece for Mother’s Day. This FREE hands-on workshops is designed for children ages 5 – 12, and is held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Learn what to expect at this post.
May 4 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Drop into a Michael’s Craft Store and take home a completed project! Just $3 per child for creative craft fun, including supplies. 10 a.m. – noon. Ages 3 and up. This day’s project is a flower frame for mom. Learn more about what to expect here.
May 4 — FREE Comic Book Day {Nationwide} — Visit HERE to find a participating location nearest you!
May 4-5 — Faerie Day Festival at Heavenly Scent Herb Farm {Fenton} — Visit this beautiful farm for fun with fairies! Story telling, dancers, crafty projects {for an additional cost} and more. $1/person for entry.
May 4-5 — Day Out With Thomas at Greenfield Village {Dearborn} —This fun-filled event offers little engineers and their families the opportunity to take a ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, meet Sir Topham Hatt, and enjoy a day of activities including arts & crafts, storytelling and more. Advance tickets recommended. Greenfield Village admission is required for nonmembers to ride Thomas. Prices: Seniors {62+}: $37.00, adults {age 13-61}: $39.75, youth {age 5-12}: $32.75, child {age 1-4}: $11.75. Parking is $6 per vehicle. {I wrote about our experience here!}

May 4, 11, 18, 25 — FREE Day at the Flint Institute of Art {Flint} — This museum is FREE to visit every Saturday thanks to First Merit Bank.
May 11 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Drop into a Michael’s Craft Store and take home a completed project! Just $3 per child for creative craft fun, including supplies. 10 a.m. – noon. Ages 3 and up. This day’s project is a paper flower for mom. Learn more about what to expect here.
May 11 — Stamp Out Hunger {Nationwide} — Leave non-persishables out by your mailbox and help a local family in need. So simple to do, and an easy way to give back.
May 11 — Touch-A-Truck presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy {Detroit} — Touch-a-Truck is a free hands-on family event that will provide children with the opportunity to explore large vehicles of all types, including those used by professionals in construction, public safety, transportation, landscaping and other industries. FREE.
May 11 Sloan Museum’s Robot Zoo kicks off at Courtland Center Mall {Burton} Explore the biomechanics of complex animal robots to discover how real animals work! This exhibit reveals the magic of nature as a master engineer. Robot animals and hands-on activities illustrate fascinating real-life characteristics, such as how a chameleon changes colors, how a giant squid propels itself, and how a fly walks on the ceiling. Great for ages 4 to adult. Through Sept. 8. {More to come!}

May 12 — HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
May 13 — MSU Bug House Open House {East Lansing} — Visit MSU’s Bug House, where you can see, touch or even hold some real creepy crawlers. In addition to viewing the amazing pinned displays, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with a whole room of insects, including walking sticks and tarantulas. 5:30-7:30 p.m.FREE.
May 14 — FREE Cone Day at Haagen-Dazs Shops {Nationwide} — Visit the Troy location between the hours of 4-8 p.m. for a FREE delicious cone!

May 18 — Kids Day in the Park {Clarkston} — Visit Clintonwood Park for entertainment and events include kite building, music, moonwalks, archery, crafts, and more. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. FREE.
May 18 — Royal Oak Kid’s Day {Royal Oak} — Visit Van Every Family Chiropractic for a special day dedicated to children’s health and safety. 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. FREE.
May 18-19 — East Lansing Art Festival {East Lansing} — This event brings together more than 200 artists. Musical acts perform and a food court is available. FREE.
May 18-19 — Greater Rochester Heritage Days {Rochester} — Visit Rochester Municipal Park for history, crafts, lumberjack shows, food, cars, a fire truck muster and more celebrating Rochester’s long history. FREE.
May 23 — Kids Komotion Concert Series {West Bloomfield} — Pack a blanket and gather the children for a free concert on the hill at Marshbank Park. Event also has inflatables {bring socks}, a free “Make & Take Instrument Station” for the first 250 kids, and more. FREE.
May 24-27 — St. Mary’s Polish Country Fair {Orchard Lake} — There’s more than 45 midway rides, live music, shopping, authentic food and more at this Polish-themed event. General admission is $5 per person or $15 per family {up to 6}.
May 25 — Michaels Kid Club {Nationwide} — Drop into a Michael’s Craft Store and take home a completed project! Just $3 per child for creative craft fun, including supplies. 10 a.m. – noon. Ages 3 and up. This day’s project is patriotic cookies. Learn more about what to expect here.
May 25 — Sensory-Friendly Saturday with the Ann Arbor Orchestra {Ann Arbor} — Join the orchestra and My Turn for sensory-friendly program. The event starts at 1:30 p.m. and features a hands-on experience with brass instruments through our Instrument Petting Zoo program. Following the zoo there will be a 30 minute performance by our Brass Quintet! Admission is free; pre-registration encouraged.
May 27 — HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! — Many communities are having a Memorial Day parade. Check your local city website to see if your community is hosting something special.
May 30 – June 2 — 56th Annual Birmingham Village Fair {Birmingham} — This popular fair is held at Shain Park. Grab family and friends and go round-and-round on a fun-loving ride; bite into classic carnival food; try your luck at a game; or sit back and take in the ambiance. Unlimited ride wristbands are $20.
