If you’re looking for a reason to visit Detroit this winter, I’ve outlined some ideas below, including the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s family-friendly “Winter at Valade.” Even though this season is different than most, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy outdoor winter fun in Detroit. Visit and enjoy a great excuse to get outside and play!
Every weekend through February 28, families can stop by Robert C. Valade Park to enjoy hands-on activities and winter games, as well as marshmallow roasting, giant outdoor fireplaces, a DJ, outside food and drink and sledding (when it snows). Upcoming themed weekends will feature a fire and ice tower, ice carving festival and Valentine’s Day programming with carriage rides.
Moving forward, weekends will feature hands-on activities and winter games, such as curling on synthetic ice and box hockey. The “Sled Shed” will be open when it snows to lend out free sleds for visitors to use on the hills at Valade Park. This looks so fun!
Additionally, several giant outdoor fireplaces will be placed throughout the park to help keep guests warm and Conservancy volunteers will have free gloves and hand-warmer pouches available for guests during select hours.
Social-distancing protocols will be in place for all activities and the Conservancy is requiring guests to wear masks when not eating or drinking.
Upcoming weekends include:
- January 15-17: Fire & Ice Tower and Live Music
- January 29-31: Ice Carving Festival
- February 12-14: Carriage Rides and Valentine’s Day Celebration
