February 1
Kick off the month in a positive way by creating these fun and encouraging heart notes for each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. My kids LOVE this tradition!
February 2
- Happy Groundhog Day! Will the little critter see a shadow? Make your prediction, and then watch Michigan’s own groundhog, Woody, make her prediction live with the Howell Nature Center. Learn more here. Kick off starts at 7:30 a.m. FREE to attend.
- Register to attend Cranbrook Institute of Science’s FREE First Friday, and get admission from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Must register if you’re visiting after 5 p.m.
- Check out Winter Blast in Royal Oak for live music, free ice skating, ice sculptures, zip line, food trucks and more. FREE admission.
February 3
- Start the morning off making a Valentine’s basket at a FREE Home Depot Kids’ Workshop. Learn more here. Workshop runs from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- The Plymouth Ice Festival runs through this weekend. This is one of the area’s most premier winter events and it’s FREE to visit. Learn more about all the events here.
- If you are a Bank of America card holder, you can receive FREE admission to Michigan Science Center on February 3 and 4 simply by presenting your Bank of America card and a valid picture ID at the ticket counter.
- The new Mazes and Brain Games exhibit opens at Sloan Museum in Flint and runs through May 19. The interactive exhibit winds its way over 5,000 square feet with 60+ puzzling experiences that inspire exploration and ingenuity.
February 4
- Check out the UofM versus MSU Gymnastics Maize Out at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor to see the teams compete. Tickets are just $6.
- Head to Michaels Stores for a FREE MakeBreak workshop to make a handmade Valentine’s Day card from 2-4 p.m. All supplies are included. Learn more here.
- Don’t forget that the Michigan History Center in Lansing is FREE every Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
February 5

If you have a young child, check out a FREE playdate with Great Start Livingston at 2|42 Community Center in Brighton. {Full disclosure, I work with Great Start and would love to meet you if you’re local to me and have littles!}

Plan a date or family day at an Escape Room. We love Escape Room Novi‘s Candy Factory for a good challenge! {Recommended for ages 8+ with adult help.}
February 8
Get crafty and make some Valentine’s to send to others — grandparents, local police/EMS/firefighters, or local nursing homes.
February 9
If you want the excuse NOT to cook, it’s National Pizza Day 😉 Try your hand at homemade pie or get carryout and support a local pizza joint.
February 10
- Visit Lowe’s for a DIY Kids’ Workshop to make a chalkboard message center from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Register in advance.
- Catch the FREE Darwin Discovery Day at MSU Museum in East Lansing from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to explore the effects of climate change on plants, animals, and ecosystems.
- Head to Hartland for their FREE annual Winterfest event featuring sledding, entertainment, food, ice skating and a fireworks show at dusk.
- Head to Michaels Stores for a Make Break to make a butterfly painted rock for FREE from 12-2 p.m. Learn more and see if your store is participating here. All supplies are included.
Bonus date night idea: Head to Epiphany Studios in Pontiac for a glass-making workshop! This day is for a beautiful heart paperweight.
February 11
- There is no better place in Michigan to celebrate Black History Month than The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. Check out their programming for the month to attend a special event, or just wander the museum on your own time. On this day, get admission for FREE thanks to their Second Sunday program.
- Additionally, this day brings the Super Bowl! Celebrate with all the delicious foods and check out this fun game to play {2024 version coming soon!}.
February 12
Visit the Michigan State University for a Bug House open house from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures! FREE.
February 13
It’s Fat Tuesday…aka Paczki Day! Support your local bakery to indulge. Buy a few flavors and cut them up to see which ones your family likes best.
February 14
- Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a great day for pancakes with sprinkles, love notes and alllll the heart shaped foods. Also, check out these ideas for a date night in or a date night out!
- If you have little ones, there also is a FREE day at the Flint Children’s Museum. Learn more here.
February 15
- Head to Longway Planetarium for a laser light show! Current shows include AC/DC versus Guns N’ Roses, Motown, and Taylor Swift. {I can’t decide which would be the best!} Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and children.
- Visit the Cranbrook Institute of Science and Cranbrook Art Museum for FREE for their third Thursday promotion, courtesy of the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan. Receive free admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. AND Cranbrook Art Museum from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Learn more here.
February 16
- Take the kids cross-country skiing. There are lots of places that do rentals! {Read about our experience at Huron Meadows here and make sure to check conditions before heading out to ensure the trails are groomed.}
- Plan a local adventure of snow tubing at Bowers Farm School in Bloomfield Hills or at Hawk Island Park in Lansing.
February 17
- It’s FREE Fishing Weekend in the state of Michigan. Grab an ice fishing pole and have some fun on the ice. All fishing license fees will be waived. Additionally, a Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend.
- Enjoy a FREE day at the Flint Institute of Art every Saturday, thanks to Huntington. {February 3, 10, 17 and 24}
February 18
- Head to The Henry Ford Museum for the launch of their new interactive exhibit, PAW Patrol: Adventure Play, at the museum through April 28. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
- Head to Michaels Stores for a Make Break to make a marble paint and pour pot for FREE from 2-4 p.m. Learn more and see if your store is participating here. All supplies are included.
- Visit Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor for the UofM versus MSU women’s basketball game. These are so much fun and a great way to introduce kids to college life! Tickets are $8.
February 19
Today is President’s Day! Take the time to learn all about our U.S. presidents. Visit the library for inspiration, or check Pinterest for cool crafts to celebrate.
February 20
Go glow-in-the-dark mini-golfing at the Putting Edge in Novi — just make sure to reserve a time in advance.
February 21
Let the kids burn energy at Kids Gotta Play in New Hudson for open play. {$8/child}
February 22
If there is fresh snow, make some snow ice cream. It’s actually pretty tasty! We love this recipe.
February 23
Bundle up and head out to geocache as a family. It’s easy to start and FREE to do! Learn how here.
February 24
- Visit Michaels Stores for a FREE MakeBreak to make a neat free painting craft inspired by Alma Thomas for Black History Month. Learn more here.
- Take a FREE tour of the Fisher Building in Detroit with Pure Detroit. There are multiple Saturdays available in February.
- Go to the University of Michigan’s Natural History Museum in Ann Arbor for a FREE public tour. After, head over to County Farm Park for their annual Ice Carving Festival, which is also FREE.
- Check out Curling Fest in Chelsea and enjoy one hour of curling on the pristine ice of the Arctic Coliseum, all equipment included. $30/person, and includes food. 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Ages 14+.
- Head to Island State Rec in Brighton for a lantern hike. Find details on statewide night hikes here.
February 25
Head to Ford Field in Detroit for Monster Jam and see monster trucks up close! Tickets start at $20.
February 26
Go ice skating at Riley Park Ice Rink in Farmington or at another local rink.
February 27
Today is National Pokémon Day. Why not spend it playing Pokémon Go, a fun and interactive game that inspires adventure? Head out to explore with the kids, hunting creatures along the way.
February 28
Escape the cold and plan a visit to an arcade. We love Dave & Busters {Livonia and Utica}, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum {Farmington Hills} and The Arcade in Brighton.
