February may be a short month, but there’s plenty of time to make it memorable. It’s the month of LOVE, Black History Month, and plenty of winter-themed fun. Get inspired with adventures and educational experiences around southeast Michigan with this list of ideas!

February 1
- Kick off the month in a positive way by creating these fun and encouraging heart notes for each day leading up to Valentine’s Day. My kids LOVE this tradition!
- Start the morning off making a Valentine’s box at a FREE Home Depot Kids’ Workshop. Learn more here. Workshop runs from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- If you are a Bank of America card holder, you can receive FREE admission to Michigan Science Center on February 1 and 2 simply by presenting your Bank of America card and a valid picture ID at the ticket counter.
February 2
- Happy Groundhog Day! Will the little critter see a shadow? Make your prediction, and then watch Michigan’s own groundhog, Woody, make her prediction live with the Howell Nature Center. Learn more here. Kick off starts at 7:30 a.m. FREE to attend.
- Check out Winter Blast in Royal Oak for live music, free ice skating, ice sculptures, zip line, food trucks and more. FREE admission.
- The Plymouth Ice Festival runs through this weekend. This is one of the area’s most premier winter events and it’s FREE to visit. Learn more about all the events here.
February 3
There is no better place in Michigan to celebrate Black History Month than The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. Check out their programming for the month to attend a special event, or just wander the museum on your own time.
February 4
Visit the new 2TheExtreme exhibit at Sloan Museum in Flint, which runs through May 11. This exhibit is recommended for ages 8 and up.
February 5
Check out a weekly $3 kids’ movie at Emagine Theaters for their Winter Kids’ Series. $5 for a Magic Pack as well.
February 6
If you have a young child, check out a FREE playdate with Great Start Livingston at Oceola Community Center in Howell from 10:30-11:30 a.m. {Full disclosure, I work with Great Start and would love to meet you if you’re local to me and have littles!}
February 7
- Visit Cranbrook Institute of Science on the 1st Friday of Each Month for FREE courtesy of the MASCO Corporation. Registration required.
- Plan a date or family day at an Escape Room. We love Escape Room Novi for a good challenge! {Recommended for ages 8+ with adult help.}
February 8
Head to Hartland for their FREE annual Winterfest event featuring sledding, entertainment, food, ice skating and a fireworks show at dusk.
February 9
- Don’t forget that the Michigan History Center in Lansing is FREE every Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
- Additionally, this day brings the Super Bowl! Celebrate with all the delicious foods and check out this fun game to play {2025 version coming soon!}.
February 10
Visit Michigan State University for a Bug House open house from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures! FREE.
February 11
Get crafty and make some Valentine’s to send to others — grandparents, local police/EMS/firefighters, or local nursing homes.
February 12
Check out our local universities for sports tickets. It’s so fun to watch basketball, hockey, gymnastics and more and nab tickets for a great price!
February 13
Push yourself to try something new — a new workout, craft or DIY project.
February 14
Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a great day for pancakes with sprinkles, love notes and alllll the heart shaped foods. Also, check out these ideas for a date night in or a date night out! If you have little ones, there also is a FREE concert with popular children’s musician Jim Gill at Shepherd of the Lakes School in Brighton.
February 15
- Visit Lowe’s for a DIY Kids’ Workshop to make a tool chest from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Register in advance.
- Enjoy a FREE SciCurious event at MSU Museum in East Lansing from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. to explore science.
- It’s FREE Fishing Weekend in the state of Michigan. Grab an ice fishing pole and have some fun on the ice. All fishing license fees will be waived. Additionally, a Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend.
- Enjoy a FREE day at the Flint Institute of Art every Saturday, thanks to Huntington.
February 16
- Take the kids cross-country skiing. There are lots of places that do rentals! {Read about our experience at Huron Meadows here and make sure to check conditions before heading out to ensure the trails are groomed.}
- Plan a local adventure of snow tubing at Bowers Farm School in Bloomfield Hills or at Hawk Island Park in Lansing.
February 17
Today is President’s Day! Take the time to learn all about our U.S. presidents. Visit the library for inspiration, or check Pinterest for cool crafts to celebrate.
February 18
Head to Longway Planetarium for a laser light show! Current shows include Laser Zeppelin and Taylor Swift. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and children.
February 19
Bake a new recipe together as a family.
February 20
Go glow-in-the-dark mini-golfing at the Putting Edge in Novi — just make sure to reserve a time in advance.
February 21
Let the kids burn energy at Kids Gotta Play in New Hudson for open play. {$8/child – weekdays only}
February 22
- Take a tour of the Fisher Building in Detroit with Pure Detroit. There are multiple Saturdays available in February.
- Go to the University of Michigan’s Natural History Museum in Ann Arbor for a FREE public tour. After, head over to County Farm Park for their annual Ice Carving Festival, which is also FREE.
- Head to Ford Field in Detroit for Monster Jam and see monster trucks up close! Tickets start at $25.
February 23
Bundle up and head out to geocache as a family. It’s easy to start and FREE to do! Learn how here.
February 24
Check out Curling Fest in Chelsea and enjoy one hour of curling on the pristine ice of the Arctic Coliseum, all equipment included. $30/person, and includes food. 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Ages 14+.
February 25
If there is fresh snow, make some snow ice cream. It’s actually pretty tasty! We love this recipe.
February 26
Go ice skating at Riley Park Ice Rink in Farmington or at another local rink.
February 27
Today is National Pokémon Day. Why not spend it playing Pokémon Go, a fun and interactive game that inspires adventure? Head out to explore with the kids, hunting creatures along the way.
February 28
- Escape the cold and plan a visit to an arcade. We love Dave & Busters {Livonia and Utica}, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum {Farmington Hills} and The Arcade in Brighton.
