Spring is almost here…Who else is excited?! March is always a fun month to do a round-up about because it’s reading month, women’s history month, St. Patrick’s Day, and more. There is lots to celebrate!
With maple syrup fun, the start of spring, and loads of “made up” holidays that are the perfect for doing something a little special, it’s great month to sit down as a family and make some plans 😉

March 1
- Kick off the month making plans!
- Register to attend Cranbrook Institute of Science’s FREE First Friday, and get admission from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Must register if you’re visiting after 5 p.m.
- If you have a car lover at home, check out Autorama in Detroit through March 3 for a cool look at hotrods!
March 2
Happy Read Across America Day!
- Check out your local library for virtual events and make it a priority to read daily this month. Love this list of creative reading ideas for the month.
- Visit the MSU Broad Art Museum in East Lansing for a FREE Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Registration encouraged.
- Head to Emagine Theaters to see one of their $3 kids’ movies. This week features Madagascar.
- Download the free app and travel around your town to visit various Little Free Libraries. Believe me when I say they spread joy and a lot of us stewards work hard to keep them amazing 😉
March 3
- It’s the first Saturday of the month, so that means a FREE Kids’ Workshop at Home Depot. This month’s project is a butterfly house. Learn more and register here.
- Visit the Michigan History Center in Lansing. It’s FREE every Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Head to Michaels Stores for a FREE MakeBreak workshop to make a handmade wreath from 2-4 p.m. Purchase a grapevine wreath; all other supplies are included. Learn more here.
- Go to the Detroit Institute of Arts for the Japanese Girls Day Celebration, featuring a tea ceremony, hina doll display, ikebana flower arrangements and more, along with storytelling and origami workshops. Events are included with admission.
March 4
- If you have a young child, check out a FREE playdate with Great Start Livingston at 2|42 Community Center in Brighton from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. {Full disclosure, I work with Great Start and would love to meet you if you’re local to me and have littles!}
March 5
- It’s Maple Syrup month and there are LOTS of events at local parks. Check the Huron-Clinton Metroparks calendar to register for a special event highlighting this delicious treat!
- If you have an EBT or WIC card, you can visit the Flint Children’s Museum for FREE through May. Learn more here.
March 6
Today is National Oreo Cookie Day!
- A few years back, we bought all the flavors we could find {Walmart had the best selection – FYI} for a taste test with the neighbor kids. It was so fun!
March 7
Today is National Cereal Day. Sounds like a great excuse to go easy on yourself for dinner 😉
- If you have access to a pond, take on a nature project and raise some tadpoles. {You can check out my Instagram reel here of ours from a few years ago.}
March 8
Today is International Women’s Day!
- Deliver flowers to the women you love the most or try one of these ideas to celebrate being a woman from reading books to listening to Girl Power music.
- What If Wilhelmenia debuts at The Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing and runs through March 17. This kid-friendly show’s tickets are $20. Before each show there will be free activities too.
- High School Musical opens in Brighton and runs this weekend and next. If you’ve never seen a Brighton Musical production, you’re in for a treat. These shows are incredible!
- Visit the Michigan Horse Expo at MSU in East Lansing. Visit to see a rodeo {just $5/person}, a mounted police demo and more. Adults {16+} are $20, children {6-15} are $5 and children 5 and under are free.
March 9
- Check out Michaels Stores to make a FREE friendship bracelet with Kids Club from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- Visit JCPenney for their Kids Zone activity from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. This month is making a spring banner. FREE.
- Head to 2|42 in Brighton for a FREE interactive music concert with Beverly Meyer – The Music Lady at 10:30 a.m.
- Visit the Flint Institute of Arts — it’s FREE every Saturday.
- Check out Step Afrika! at The Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing. Tickets start at $19.
- Head to Island State Rec in Brighton for a lantern hike starting at 7 p.m. Find details on statewide night hikes here.
March 10
This day is Mario Day…MAR10 — get it?! It’s also Daylight Savings Time!
- Play some Mario Kart as a family. Or go low-tech and learn to draw Mario!
- Visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for FREE thanks to the Second Sundays program.
- Visit Corktown, Detroit’s oldest surviving neighborhood, for the annual Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m.
March 11
- Head to Michigan State University for their Bug House open house from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures. FREE.
March 12
- If it has been awhile, check out the Michigan Activity Pass program to see what’s new or plan some places to visit for free/discounted this summer.
March 13
Happy 313 Day, Detroit!
- Celebrate 313 Day by thinking about all the reasons to love Detroit. It’s also the perfect excuse for Detroit-style coney dogs, Faygo, and Better Made chips for dinner too.
March 14
Happy Pi Day!
- Celebrate Pi with these STEM activities or bake a pie. All Grand Traverse Pie Company shops are offering a free slice of Michigan ABC Pie with any purchase!
- Head to The Henry Ford Museum for the new interactive exhibit, PAW Patrol: Adventure Play, at the museum through April 28. Learn more and purchase tickets here.
March 15
- Take a spring walk and climb the giant boulders at the Carpenter Lake Nature Trail in Southfield. FREE and tons of fun for kids! If that trail isn’t in your area, visit one of these hiking trails to look for early signs of spring.
March 16
- Visit Pinckney for a St. Patrick’s Day parade. A parade at noon will feature bagpipe bands, Irish dancers and more. FREE to attend. There also is a Run For The Gold 5K and Kids 1/4 mile Fun Run happening {just for ages 12 and under}. Learn more and register here.
- Plan a road trip over to Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids to see butterflies.
- Register for and attend a kids’ workshop at Lowe’s to make a FREE bird feeder. {Register is advance here}
- Take a FREE tour of the Fisher Building in Detroit with Pure Detroit. There are multiple Saturdays available in March.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
- Teach the kids a bit about why we celebrate St. Patty’s with this article from National Geographic Kids.

- Head to a local community theatre to see a show. There are tons of great shows coming up!

Happy first day of SPRING!

- This is a great time of year to see animals since it’s not too hot, not too cold. Check out the Creature Conservancy or The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms in Ann Arbor.

This day is World Down Syndrome Day!
- Rock mismatched socks to pay homage to all the beautiful people who have three sets of the 21st chromosome! {This list of books that teach children about disabilities and differences is fantastic}
- Visit the Cranbrook Institute of Science and Cranbrook Art Museum for FREE for their third Thursday promotion, courtesy of the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan. - Head to Fenner Nature Center in Lansing for the annual Maple Syrup Festival. {Purchase tickets in advance once the link is posted!}

- Take a guided spring Wonder Walk with Matthaei Botanical Garden in Ann Arbor. FREE.
- Mild temps are perfect for biking on a local trail. We love Settler’s Park in Hartland. FREE to visit.
March 25
- Visit the beautiful Stepping Stones Falls in Flint and walk the woodsy 1.25 mile paved path.
March 26
- Learn about the history of the Detroit River and more at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. FREE to visit with a Michigan Recreation Passport.
March 27
- It’s baby animal season. We love visiting Tractor Supply Co. and seeing the baby chicks. It’s also our favorite spot to pick-up rain boots!
- The Kensington Farm Center is another favorite for baby animals. If you visit around 3 p.m., you will see the animals get fed, too.
March 28
- Grab combo tickets for both Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium for an entire day of fun on the beautiful Flint Cultural Campus. {We love this spot for easy parking and adorable family fun!}
March 29
- Look for signs of spring at the ultra beautiful Ledges of Grand Ledge {just outside of Lansing}.
March 30
- With snow *hopefully* melted, this is a great time to collect trash in your city. Challenge the kids to see who can pick up the most.
March 31
- Visit Best In Games in Ypsilanti for a Family Fun Day. For just $25, access a ton of attractions such as Laser Tag, VR Monster Truck Ride, Drop Tower, Adventure Park and more. 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. only.
