Spring is almost here…Who else is excited?! March is always a fun month to do a round-up about because it has SO many random and fun holidays. It’s reading month, Women’s History month, there’s 313 Day, Pi Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and more. There is lots to celebrate, so it’s great month to sit down as a family and make some plans!

March 1
- Kick off the month making plans!
- If you have a car lover at home, check out Autorama in Detroit through March 2 for a cool look at hotrods!
- Visit the MSU Broad Art Museum in East Lansing for a FREE Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Registration encouraged.
- It’s the first Saturday of the month, so that means a FREE Kids’ Workshop at Home Depot. This month’s project is a basketball game. Learn more and register here.
March 2
Happy Read Across America Day!
- Check out your local library for virtual events and make it a priority to read daily this month. Love this list of creative reading ideas for the month.
- Download the free app and travel around your town to visit various Little Free Libraries. Believe me when I say they spread joy and a lot of us stewards work hard to keep them amazing 😉
- Visit the Michigan History Center in Lansing. It’s FREE every Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Head to Michaels Stores for a MakeBreak workshop to make a butterfly wreath from 2-4 p.m. $10 fee for supplies. Learn more here.

It’s Maple Syrup month and there are LOTS of events at local parks. Check the Huron-Clinton Metroparks calendar to register for a special event highlighting this delicious treat!
March 4
Happy Fat Tuesday! What Paczki are you eating?
- If you have an EBT or WIC card, you can visit the Flint Children’s Museum for FREE. Learn more here. Additionally, you can use a Michigan Activity Pass for a discounted admission of $6/person.
March 5
- If you have access to a pond, take on a nature project and raise some tadpoles. {You can check out my Instagram reel here of ours from a few years ago.}

Today is National Oreo Cookie Day!
A few years back, we bought all the flavors we could find for a taste test with the neighbor kids. It was so fun!
March 7
Today is National Cereal Day. Sounds like a great excuse to go easy on yourself for dinner 😉
- Register to attend Cranbrook Institute of Science’s FREE First Friday, and get admission from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Must register if you’re visiting after 5 p.m.
- Visit the Michigan Horse Expo at MSU in East Lansing. Visit to see a rodeo {just $5/person}, a mounted police demo and more. Adults {16+} are $20, children {6-15} are $5 and children 5 and under are free.
March 8
Today is International Women’s Day!
- Deliver flowers to the women you love the most or try one of these ideas to celebrate being a woman from reading books to listening to Girl Power music.
- Visit the Flint Institute of Arts — it’s FREE every Saturday.
- Visit JCPenney for their Kids Zone activity from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. This month is making a rainbow mobile. FREE.
- Head to Island State Rec in Brighton for a lantern hike starting at 7 p.m. Details are here.
March 9
It’s Daylight Savings day! Hooray for more light!
Visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for FREE thanks to the Second Sundays program.
March 10
This day is Mario Day…MAR10 — get it?! It’s also Daylight Savings Time!
- Play some Mario Kart as a family. Or go low-tech and learn to draw Mario!
- Head to Michigan State University for their Bug House open house from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and learn all about creepy crawly creatures. FREE.
March 11
Plan a road trip over to Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids to see butterflies. {MSU’s Butterflies are coming in April!}
March 12

Happy 313 Day, Detroit!
Celebrate 313 Day by thinking about all the reasons to love Detroit. It’s also the perfect excuse for Detroit-style coney dogs, Faygo, and Better Made chips for dinner too.
March 14
Happy Pi Day!
- Celebrate Pi with these STEM activities or bake a pie.
- All Grand Traverse Pie Company shops are offering a free slice of Michigan ABC Pie with any purchase.
March 15
- If you have little ones, check out a FREE Family Fun Day to celebrate Early Literacy at 2|42 in Brighton.
- Register for and attend a kids’ workshop at Lowe’s to make a FREE recycling truck. {Register is advance here}
- Visit Pinckney for a St. Patrick’s Day parade. A parade at noon will feature bagpipe bands, Irish dancers and more. FREE to attend. There also is a Run For The Gold 5K and Kids 1/4 mile Fun Run happening {just for ages 12 and under}. Learn more and register here.
March 16
- Visit Corktown, Detroit’s oldest surviving neighborhood, for the annual Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m.
- Take a tour of the Fisher Building in Detroit with Pure Detroit. There are multiple Saturdays available in March.
March 17
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Teach the kids a bit about why we celebrate St. Patty’s with this article from National Geographic Kids.
March 18
Head to a local community theatre to see a show. There are tons of great shows coming up!
March 19
- Take a guided spring Wonder Walk with Matthaei Botanical Garden in Ann Arbor. FREE.
- This is a great time of year to see animals since it’s not too hot, not too cold. Check out the Creature Conservancy or The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms in Ann Arbor.
March 20
Happy first day of SPRING!
- Get inspired with this bucket list of 50+ ideas for spring or check out a new spot for a staycation in nature.
- Check your local Dairy Queen — many celebrate FREE Cone Day on this day with donations benefiting charity.
March 21
This day is World Down Syndrome Day!
- Rock mismatched socks to pay homage to all the beautiful people who have three sets of the 21st chromosome. {This list of books that teach children about disabilities and differences is fantastic}
March 22
- Head to Fenner Nature Center in Lansing for the annual Maple Syrup Festival. {Purchase tickets in advance once the link is posted!}
March 23
- Time for some spring cleaning! Encourage the kids to donate toys they never play with to classrooms or local thrift causes.
- Make some festive spring art with Art For Kids Hub.
March 24
- Mild temps and low mosquitos are perfect for biking on a local trail. We love Settler’s Park in Hartland. FREE to visit.
March 25
- Visit the beautiful Stepping Stones Falls in Flint and walk the woodsy 1.25 mile paved path.
March 26
- Learn about the history of the Detroit River and more at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. FREE to visit with a Michigan Recreation Passport.
March 27
- It’s baby animal season. We love visiting Tractor Supply Co. and seeing the baby chicks. It’s also our favorite spot to pick-up rain boots!
- The Kensington Farm Center is another favorite for baby animals. If you visit around 3 p.m., you will see the animals get fed, too.
March 28
Grab combo tickets for both Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium for an entire day of fun on the beautiful Flint Cultural Campus. {We love this spot for easy parking and adorable family fun!}
March 29
Look for signs of spring at the ultra beautiful Ledges of Grand Ledge {just outside of Lansing}.
March 30
With snow *hopefully* melted, this is a great time to collect trash in your city. Challenge the kids to see who can pick up the most.
March 31
Take a spring walk and climb the giant boulders at the Carpenter Lake Nature Trail in Southfield. FREE and tons of fun for kids! If that trail isn’t in your area, visit one of these hiking trails to look for early signs of spring.
