June is such an incredible month…Flowers blooming, strawberries in-season, and school is typically OUT for summer, whether that is a good thing or a bad thing in your house 😉
We are looking forward to kicking off our 2024 summer bucket list and planning plenty of fun to keep us busy in between the lazy days.

June 1
- Visit New Hudson for the International Kite Festival and see some beautiful kites soaring in the sky. Kids can even get a free kite.
- Check out a FREE Kids’ Workshop at Home Depot. This month’s project is a grill gift card box {Think Father’s Day!}. Learn more and register here.
- Visit the Flint Institute of Arts — it’s FREE every Saturday.
- Visit Bower’s School Farm in Bloomfield Hills for open barn from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. $10/person for ages 2 and up.
- Take a tour of the Fisher Building in Detroit with Pure Detroit. $15/person.
- Head to the MSU Children’s Garden for a Garden Geocache event from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. $5/child. Register here.
- Visit the MSU Broad Art Museum in East Lansing for a FREE Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Registration encouraged.
June 2
- Visit Michael’s for a FREE Makebreak. On this day, participants can make an Andy Warhol-inspired painting after purchasing a canvas.
- Head to the Michigan History Center in Lansing. It’s FREE every Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Check out a local Farmer’s Market.
June 3
It’s World Bicycle Day. Are you able to bike somewhere fun? This is the perfect day to ditch the car and rides bikes, even if it’s just for a loop in your neighborhood.
June 4
Go to Silver Lake in Fenton for a free show from the Silver Lake Ski Club every Tuesday with a pre-show at 6:15 p.m. and the real show at 7 p.m. These are so fun to attend! Pack a picnic and enjoy the show. {$5 park entrance fee}
June 5
Check out the amazing nature-inspired Alexandria’s Playscape at the Howell Nature Center. Just fair warning, bring a change of clothes in case kids get wet 😉 {Make sure to grab a Michigan Activity Pass for free entry too!}
June 6
Strawberries are officially ready, head out to pick strawberries at a U-pick farm! We had a great experience at Diedrich’s in Webberville last season. Spicer’s in Fenton is another favorite.
June 7
This day is National Donut Day. Need I say more?! Perfect reason to get out for a sweet treat and support a local bakery.
June 8
- It’s Michigan’s DNR FREE Fishing Weekend. All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. A Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites either.
- Visit Michael’s Stores to paint rocks with Kids Club from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. All supplies are FREE.
- Visit JCPenney for their Kids Zone activity from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. This month is making a Father’s Day photo frame and card. FREE.
June 9
- Visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for FREE thanks to the Second Sundays program.
- Make plans to visit The Henry Ford for the new Dinosaurs in Motion exhibit.
June 10
Make some fun personalized DIY tie-dye towels. Super fun and easy! Learn how here.
June 11
Visit a local beach and make a sand volcano.
June 12
Head to the Hamburg Family Fun Fest for some carnival fun. {We love this smaller carnival with lots of great events!}
June 13
Visit Detroit to check out Next Level complete with rollerskating {$10/person; $3 to rent skates}, video games and more. {Note: Closed Mondays – Wednesdays}
June 14
- Disney’s Inside Out 2 premieres on this day. {We are SO excited for this one!}
- Check out a $3 kids’ movie at Emagine Theatre locations. There is a new one each week, and there is FREE popcorn on Tuesdays for loyalty members. Check out this post for details.
- Head to Ann Arbor now through June 30 for hundreds of performances at Ann Arbor’s Summer Festival. Such a great lineup for live music, kid crafts, movies and more.
June 15
- Visit Lowe’s to make a FREE Father’s Day UTV. Register here.
- Head to Impression 5 in Lansing for the exhibit opening for Organ Adventure: Exploring the Human Body.
June 16
Happy Father’s Day! Celebrate those dads in your life with some fun 🙂
June 17
Head to one of our favorite spots in Michigan — Sloan Museum of Discovery. After, catch a show at the Longway Planetarium. Grab combo tickets here.
June 18
Plan a road trip to Midland to visit Dow Gardens. It’s a beautiful place to spend an entire day!
June 19
Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth, also known as “Emancipation Day” or “Freedom Day,” commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth was declared a National holiday Here’s a great video for kids.
June 20
Happy Summer Solstice! Do something special to celebrate or work with your family members to make a summertime playlist of upbeat music.
June 21
- Visit the University of Michigan Natural History Museum in Ann Arbor to see their new dinosaur exhibit. FREE.
- Pack a picnic and visit Cranbrook Gardens and check out what’s in bloom — it’s free to visit! After, sneak over to the Cranbrook Art Museum’s artistically amazing putt-putt course. $15/adults, $8/child.
June 22
- If you are in need of an adventure, check out a local disc golfing course. Perfect to do as an inexpensive date night or with kids.
- Play FootGolf. Think golf with soccer balls. Great for older kids! See this list for local courses.
- Visit Michael’s Stores to make a pom pom butterfly with Kids Club from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. All supplies are FREE.
June 23
- The weather is perfect for raising butterflies at home. Grab an at-home science kit and watch metamorphosis happen right before your eyes!
- Check out a U-pick lavender farm! They should be starting to open at this time.
June 24
Check out the fireworks in Detroit for an amazing display on the river. Details are here. FREE.
June 25
Grab some tubes and head to Ann Arbor to tube the Argo Cascades. {Learn more here.}
June 26
Let’s go to the zoo! A few unique ones we love include Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Saginaw Children’s Zoo and the Wilderness Trails Zoo in Birch Run.
June 27

Check out hot air balloons at my absolute favorite festival ever — the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in Howell.
June 29
Visit German Park in Ann Arbor to enjoy German food and music. $10/person, children 12 and under are free.
June 30
Go creeking! Perfect way to cool off and discover nature. {We love playing in the river at Mill Creek Park North in Dexter and getting root beer floats at the old fashioned A&W drive-thru across the street!
More tips for making it the BEST SUMMER EVER!
- If you haven’t done so already, create a summer bucket list of things you’d like to do. It can be simple things — lemonade stand or ice cream for dinner, or include road trips. {Get inspired here.}
- Check your local library’s calendar for events you may want to attend. Remember, you can visit other libraries for many events too.
- Make sure you have signed up for Kids Bowl Free. Such a great way to keep kids ages 12 and under busy this summer, especially on rainy days.
- Keep up with summer reading by seeing what challenges your library offers, checking out a local StoryWalk trail, or visiting a Little Free Library for some new reads.
