What do you do when your daughter becomes a teenager? A few weeks ago, I freaked when I thought of that notion – of my babies growing up – and one day, dating and making stupid decisions, much like I did when I was a teen.
Then I met Scarlett Strickland, a talented 17-year-old Detroit photographer who not only knows her trade but also is a polite and businesses-savvy gal. Coupled with her adorable assistant, Emily, suddenly I didn’t feel so scared of teen girls. These girls were fantastic…and great with Little K.
Last week, Scarlett, on behalf of her company, Chasing Shadows Photography, took K’s 18-month photos and she did a beautiful job! I was amazed by her ability to get down on the ground and crawl around so she could capture K in her true element. So, needless to say, we moved around. A lot. Because anyone with a young toddler knows it ain’t easy to get them to smile or even look at the camera! Here are a few of my favorite shots she captured:

Even though Scarlett is just shy of 18 years old, you would never know it. She was professional while setting up the shoot and her enthusiasm for photography is contagious.
Maybe it’s because she started her business, Chasing Shadows Photography (CSP) when she was just 15 (!), so she actually has had some solid experience. At that time, she had no desire to be a photographer, instead she wanted to be a Marine Biologist or a journalist.
When I asked her about it, she said, “CSP was in a funny way, almost an accident. I was so inspired by the photographers I was interning for and their success on their Facebook page, that I created a Facebook page for my photography as well, just to kind of organize all my photographs into one place. After I created the page, out of no where I was suddenly receiving emails and phone calls from people asking me to photograph for them. It was amazing and shocking to me how many people were actually contacting me about photo shoots once my page was up. It was then that I suddenly found myself knee-deep in this business! After that, I went out and incorporated CSP and made it official!”
So, what’s in store for her future? Right now, she’s deciding between colleges based in Detroit, Chicago, Georgia, New York and Paris, all the while continuing to grow CSP.
She added, “I want to start incorporating and supporting the young entrepreneurs out there even more into my business. It’s my goal to change the way businesses look at the young entrepreneur. Along with that, I really desire to photograph somewhere in the fashion industry, or lifestyle/advertising portraits, but we will see where life takes me!”
She also wanted to make sure I mention the most important people of all to her – her family. “My mom and dad have been some of the most truly supporting parents a young artist could ever ask for, and my sister has given up SO much for my parents to do the things they have been able to do for me. It never goes under appreciated. My success is all because of them, their guidance and their support.”
How inspiring and sweet is her story? I only wish I had all that talent at 18!
