How is it already August? Summer is slipping by! We are in the final countdown of family fun before we return to school. Use the month ahead to squeeze in some family fun!
31 Things To Do With Kids in August 2021 in Southeast Michigan
August 1 — Visit the Monore County Fairgrounds for some drive-thru carnival food. Perfect excuse for a road trip {or to visit the Toledo Zoo, perhaps?}
Also, make sure to check out Minions as the Emagine $3 kids’ movies events come to a close!
August 2 — Check out what’s new on your streaming service and have a family movie night. {The original Sea Biscuit, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Vivo, an animated musical adventure from Lin-Manuel Miranda are on my list to watch on Netflix!}
August 3 — Roller-skate and play at the Monroe Street Midway in Detroit. $13/person to skate with rental included.
August 4 — Pack up bikes and scooters and check out the fun and FREE trails at Settlers Park in Hartland.
August 5 — Visit the Gaffield’s Children Garden at University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor.
August 6 — Celebrate National Root Beer Float day by making a float at home!
August 7 — Visit Jimmy John’s Field in Utica for a special ZOOperstars event for kids while enjoying a baseball game. Learn more about visiting this field here.
August 8 — Visit a local sunflower field and take family photos! {Find local places to visit here}
August 9 — Today is Book Lover’s Day. Visit your local library {or do curbside} or visit a Little Free Library.
August 10 — Check out the Jim Henson exhibit at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn before it closes on September 6.
August 11 — Grab a tube and head out to the Argo Cascades. So much fun and FREE to do! {Ann Arbor}
August 12 — Visit Glenlore Trails in Commerce Township for their newest light show, Expedition. {This place is really neat — we loved it at Christmastime!} $15/kids; $25/ages 13+.
August 13 — It’s Friday the 13th. Perhaps you should plan a road trip to Hell…Michigan?! 😉
August 14 — It’s FREE Comic Book Day! Find a local retailer planning to participate and go get a free comic.
August 15 — Find a local school or student in need and make a donation. Or, check in with your child’s teacher to see if they have any classroom needs. {It costs the average student $600 to go back-to-school. Help if you are able!}
August 16 — Cranbrook Gardens in Bloomfield Hills is a great FREE spot to visit and picnic. Have fun exploring the gorgeous property.
August 17 — Visit a new playground. Our favorites in Livingston County are here. We also love County Farm Park and Gallup Park in Ann Arbor.
August 18 — Even if you plan to do virtual or homeschool, take some time to create a back-to-school sign to commemorate the year.
August 19 — Take a road trip to Dow Gardens and the Whiting Canopy Walk in Midland.
August 20 — Today is National Lemonade Day. Encourage the kids to set up a stand for a little extra cash.
August 21 — Visit the Yankee Air Museum in Belleville for a special behind-the-scenes tour, especially if you have a child interested in aviation! $12/person.
Additionally, check out old cars at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak on this day.
August 22 — Visit Crossroads Village in Flint for Day Out With Thomas. {This was one of our favorite events when my kiddos were younger! See a review here.} Happening next weekend as well.
August 23 — Take an adventure to visit the gorgeous rock formation know as The Ledges in Grand Ledge, just outside of Lansing.
August 24 — Practice reading by visiting a StoryWalk trail. {Like this one in Highland}
August 25 — It’s National Banana Split day. Sounds like a great excuse to have ice cream for dinner!
August 26 — Pack a picnic and spend a summer day at Heritage Park in Farmington Hills, where kids can enjoy the splash pad, nature center, trails, and more for FREE.
August 27 — If you’re back to school, and ready for some school spirit, tie-dye some shirts in your school colors. {We love the Tulip brand dye!}
August 28 — Visit Heavenly Scent Herb Farm in Fenton today and tomorrow for their Summer Faire. Their gardens are absolutely stunning! Perfect place for photos. There will also be 50 different artisans on site. $3/person to attend.
August 29 — Plan a FREE scavenger hunt in your town. Easy and fun to do with multiple families!
August 30 — Have your child journal about their summer so they can look back and remember all the fun things they were able to do.
August 31 — Is it too early for cider a donuts?! Nah! Start planning ahead and put together a fall bucket list with your family.
